Total COVID-19-related hospitalizations have dropped below 1,000 for the first time since March 18, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.

In a statement, the governor said 996 people were hospitalized as COVID-19 patients across the state. That is down from a peak of 18,825 hospitalizations April 12.

On Friday, Central New York, the Finger Lakes, the Mohawk Valley, the North Country and the Southern Tier will enter Phase Four of reopening.

The governor’s office also released the following statistics:

• new patients admitted: 68 — a drop of 29 from the previous day;

• people in ICU: 270 — a drop of 20;

• those in ICU who are intubated: 167 — a drop of 23

• total discharges: 70,010 — an increase of 110;

• deaths: 17

• total deaths in state: 24,800.

“After three months of New Yorkers working hard, doing the right thing and taking this seriously, the state has its lowest COVID-19 hospitalization rate since this started,” Cuomo said. “Facts are facts, even in this crazy political environment, and what we’re saying in New York is we did the right thing. New Yorkers have been locked up and closed their businesses. We have the virus under control finally. We had to flatten the curve. We don’t want to go back.”

Cuomo said 749 new cases of the virus were reported Wednesday, bringing the statewide total 390,415. Of those cases, 123 are in Chautauqua County; 121 in Cattaraugus County; 7,138 in Erie County and 58 in Allegany County.
