The Jamestown Police Department is doing everything possible to identify and arrest those involved in a series of shootings that have taken place over the last couple of months.

That was the message Mayor Eddie Sundquist and Jamestown Police Chief Harry Snellings delivered during a press conference Tuesday morning.

The pair provided a brief update on the investigation into the shootings — the most recent occurring Jan. 25 near the intersection of Hazzard Street and Newland Avenue. A man sitting in a vehicle was struck by gunfire multiple times before being airlifted to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

The man is currently in stable condition, Snellings said Tuesday.

Sundquist said Tuesday’s press conference was meant to update the public and to ask for input and cooperation.

“This administration is more about transparency and dialogue with the community,” Sundquist said. “So we thought it was right to hold a meeting to talk about the shootings that have occurred in the last month or so.”

“These are not random shootings — there is not a larger danger to the community,” the mayor added. “These shootings have been targeted and center around drugs and gang violence. I, and the police department, take these shootings very seriously. That’s why we are addressing the community.”

Snellings said his department “takes these incidents very seriously, and we’re definitely putting every effort in to resolve the matter.”

Other shootings, all considered “targeted attacks” by investigators, occurred around Christmas.

One was reported on Christmas Eve near Price and Sturges streets. Police said four to five shots were fired at a vehicle from a person standing in the area. No one was struck by the gunfire.

On Christmas Day, officers were alerted at 4:26 p.m. to sounds of shots being fired on Newland Avenue, near Forest Avenue. A witness told county dispatch that two vehicles, a dark-colored SUV and a silver sedan, may have been involved and that a nearby window had been struck.

The police chief said the Christmas Day and Jan. 25 shootings are connected, but could not provide further information citing an ongoing investigation.

Snellings also addressed the Nov. 30 shooting at the Bullfrog Hotel Bar and Grill, 1414 E. Second St. Police told The Post-Journal at the time that an altercation took place between two people in a hallway leading into the bar when two shots were fired. A man, who was struck twice, was taken to UPMC Chautauqua and later transferred to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

No charges have been filed in the incident, which has received significant media coverage. Snellings said the man who was shot has retained an attorney; he said attempts to interview the man through his attorney have been unsuccessful.

“We’ve taken the investigation and we’ve turned it over to the (Chautauqua County) District Attorney’s Office for further review and consideration,” Snellings said.
