Two Cattaraugus County residents have been charged in the September 1997 murder of a man inside his home.

The Cattaraugus County District Attorney’s Office announced that indictments had been received against Tricia Carrier (formerly Tricia Chase) and Gregory Kerls.

William H. Chase IV was killed inside his Route 16 home in the town of Ischua on Sept. 21, 1997.

Kerls was arraigned before Cattaraugus County Court Judge Ronald Ploetz. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail.

Carrier was taken into custody Wednesday in Olean and arraigned before Ploetz. She pleaded not guilty, and bail was set at $75,000 cash or bond.

“The District Attorney’s Office credits the New York State Police investigators, both past and present, for their relentless search for the truth and justice,” the DA’s office said in a statement. “Additionally, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the initial investigation and leads.”
