(5 PM) National Guard Soldiers, Including Some From Jamestown, Return From NATO Mission

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — New York Army National Guard soldiers are returning to the Air Reserve Station at Niagara Falls after participating in a NATO mission to train Ukrainian soldiers.

The soldiers were part of a group that left New York last October to join troops from Canada, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom in the training mission to Ukraine.

On Thursday afternoon, 76 soldiers will return to Niagara Falls. They include soldiers assigned to the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry headquartered at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, with elements in Jamestown, Buffalo and Geneva, as well as members of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse.

Officials say the unit lost 21-year-old Specialist Joseph Nelk of Pittsford, who died unexpectedly of natural causes in Ukraine.
