JCC To Screen Film Friday

Jamestown Community College is hosting a screening of the award-winning film “Obsessed With Light” at 5 p.m. Friday in the Jamestown Campus Student Union.

Presented by the Jamestown Dance Festival, the showing is free, open to the public, and concludes with a panel discussion.

“Obsessed with Light,” which has been featured in many national and international film festivals, pulls back the curtain on Loie Fuller, a wildly original dance performer and choreographer who revolutionized the visual culture of the early 20th century.

The documentary delves into the influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary artists, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Bill T. Jones, Shakira, and William Kentridge. The film also uncovers commonalities that connect these creative luminaries to Fuller and to each other.

The American creator of modern dance, Fuller (1862-1928) invented a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric, and movement. She also pioneered the ingenious use of electricity for the stage, even building a glass floor so that she could be lit from below. Fuller was the first choreographer to attempt to copyright her dances and sued to protect her work as early as 1893.

“Obsessed with Light” was created by award-winning filmmakers Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum.

An additional showing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown.

Starting at $2.99/week.
