Ross Grange Members Hear From Pair

The March meeting of Ross Grange was held at the Falcon’s Nest Banquet Hall in Falconer.

It opened with president Robert Goodwin leading the pledge to the American Flag. Program director Betty Wakefield then introduced Jeff Winton, founder of Rural Minds. He grew up on a local dairy farm, graduated from Cassadaga Valley Central School and Cornell University. After several years in the business world away from Chautauqua County, he is back with his own dairy farm near Mayville.

Winton shared his family story of a nephew who committed suicide when no one realized there was a mental health problem. From this experience he realized there is a rural mental health crisis. He has partnered with National Grange to “Grow Hope Together” throughout the nation. There is a higher percentage of depression and suicides in rural America than urban and city areas. One of five teenagers have mental issues.

Teresa McMahon, a mental health professional with Cornell University Farm Net, shared the help that is available through her group. People need to be able to talk with others about problems and not keep to themselves. Anyone can call 988 to talk with someone whenever needed.

Both speakers were available to visit with any who wished to speak with them after the program.

Ross Grange has been active in helping the community for nearly 150 years and invites others to join. The April meeting of Ross Grange will be at the Falcon’s Nest on April 10.
