SINCLAIRVILLE — Secondgraders from Sinclairville Elementary School recently visited Science Central Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana — from the comfort of their auditorium.

For the fifth straight year, Cassadaga Valley second grade teacher Joni Hale utilized Distance Learning services from Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES to provide an out-of-the-classroom experience for the entire second grade.

“When I find an (electronic) field trip that I think relates to my classroom, I share it with the other three second grade teachers and all four of us go on the field trips,” Hale said. “Our whole second grade really enjoys the ‘What’s the Matter’ with the Science Central Museum field trip because they get to see how liquid nitrogen works which is something that we would otherwise not be able to show them in class. We use the Matter field trip to supplement our science unit on matter.”

Through various experiments, students learned about the different states of matter, density, processes of science, and even the use of safety equipment when studying chemistry. The interactive experience even allows for students to interact with presenters in real-time.

Prior to the pandemic, and more so now, districts that utilize Distance Learning services through E2CCB have been able to give students experiences they otherwise wouldn’t receive. Whether it’s Career Connections which connects career professionals and students, or Class-to-Class Collaboration which connects multiple classrooms for group instruction, DL services are meant to open up new learning opportunities for students.

“These virtual field trips, and many of our DL offerings, offer innovative uses of the technology available to connect classes to new learning experiences beyond our local area,” said Bryan Olson, E2CCB Distance Learning coordinator. “We are fortunate to have the ability to offer learning opportunities teachers can connect to their curriculum that students find fun and engaging. Not only do students learn from experts across the globe, but some may even have new places they want to visit someday.”
