Thule Lodge Plans Annual Christmas Dinner

FALCONER — The Thule Lodge No. 127 was organized 114 years ago in the Jamestown/Falconer area to help the Swedish immigrants with housing, employment and schools. Today, the lodge exists to preserve the Swedish heritage through activities and events. One is the annual December dinner known as the Dopp I Gryta. This means the dipping of various kinds of breads. The meal may include various Swedish meats, many kinds of cheeses and breads, and many kinds of cookies. If one chooses, Lutefisk is one kind of food which is sometimes served, and takes a lot of preparation. It has been known that during the preparation of lutefisk, “the steaming will cause wallpaper to roll off the walls, and the bird in the cuckoo clock to faint.”

The Dopp I Gryta meal will be prepared by the 3C’s catering and served to the members of the lodge on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 12:30 p.m. at the Falcon’s Nest Banquet Hall in Falconer. Invitation cards with details are being sent to members, and reservations are necessary. Treasurer Loretta Smith has taken charge of the menu and the reservation cards.

At the last Thule Lodge meeting, chairman Tom Eckberg welcomed all to the meeting, and chaplain Diane K. Shaw gave the opening and closing messages. Secretary and lodge historian John Sipos led all in the pledge of allegiance, gave the roll call of officers, and read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer Smith gave the financial report of the lodge.

New members Lorinda Johnson and Cathy Peterson was installed to the lodge during a ceremony by immediate past chairman Tim Miller and vice chairman Sipos. A welcome to the new members was given by all. New members to Thule Lodge are always welcome.

Vice chairman Susan W. Sipos read those who are nominated for officers in 2022. Voting on the slate of officers will take place in December. Vice chairman Sipos also gave a cultural report on the history of the Dalahast, which is a wood carving dating several centuries and a well known Swedish ornament. All of the Dalahasts are hand carved and hand painted, so no two are exactly alike. Chairman Eckberg was the recipient of the meeting award.

Following the meeting, refreshments prepared by the 3C’s were served to all.
