JCC To Welcome 250 Students In Residence Halls

Jamestown Community College is preparing to welcome up to 250 students to its Hillside Suites residence halls this fall.

Precautions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted JCC’s residence life program to reduce the number of available beds by 25% or more from maximum capacity to reduce density and eliminate double occupancy rooms.

“The health and safety of students is the highest priority for JCC and its residence life team,” said Tyler Silagyi, JCC’s residence life director, emphasizing that several protocols have been implemented to prepare for students moving onto the Jamestown Campus in late August.

As part of an enhanced health and safety plan, all residential students at JCC will be required to complete a daily health assessment through a mobile application. JCC’s health services staff will monitor students who become ill or exhibit symptoms related to COVID-19. The plan, which compiles with Centers for Disease Control and state health department guidelines, includes procedures for isolating and monitoring students who may become infected with the virus.

Students who are coming from locations listed as high risk by the CDC will be placed in self-quarantine for the required 14-day period. JCC’s health services staff maintains regular contact with county health department officials for guidance on residence hall occupancy this fall.

JCC’s Hillside Suites allow for students to have private bedrooms in apartment-style living quarters, with up to four individuals assigned to each suite. Each suite will be considered a ‘family unit,’ according to CDC guidelines. Although students will not have to wear face masks in the suites, they will be required to wear masks in all common areas of the residence halls and throughout all other campus facilities.

Although it will not be a typical fall semester for students living on campus, JCC’s residence life and campus life staffs have developed comprehensive programming to enhance the students’ on-campus living experience. Students can join clubs and organizations and participate in on-site and virtual programming throughout the fall semester.

“While the on-campus experience will be different this year for our residents than in years past, we’re proud of the type of programming — including a variety of activities and entertainment – that we’ll be able to provide for our students,” said Silagyi, whose staff includes two residence directors and several resident assistants.

JCC’s residence halls are home to local and regional students as well as out-of-state and international students who are enrolled in a number of academic programs and, in some cases, are members of athletic teams.

On-campus dining will be modified to include pre-packaged hot meals, grab ‘n go items, and microwaveable frozen or fresh meals. The Jayhawk Cafe’s seating capacity, located in the Hamilton Collegiate Center, will be reduced to comply with social distancing recommendations.

Details on a staggered move-in schedule will be shared with residence hall students within the next few weeks, Silagyi added.
