Association Offering Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop

Local author Beth Peyton gave a presentation at the August Recovery Luncheon at the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County about the “Writing Your Life” workshop she is presenting on Friday afternoons from September through November.

The author of “Clear Skies, Deep Water: A Chautauqua Memoir” explained that participants will learn the basics of creative nonfiction, keep a daily journal, read articles and essays that capture the best of creative nonfiction, give and receive feedback, and ultimately tell a true story about themselves with a completed essay.

Peyton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in social justice from Montana State University and received her masters degree in creative nonfiction from Carlow University, where she studied in Pittsburgh and Ireland. She lives in Chautauqua County alongside many of the characters in her book.

Those in recovery who would like to participate in the “Writing Your Life” workshop can register by emailing Mental Health Association program director, at Michael.Nordin@mhachautauqua.org.

As part of the luncheon program, Nordin presented 12 certificates, recognizing five people moving to phase 2, one to Phase 3, and four successfully completing treatment court, one person achieving employment and another beginning classes at Jamestown Community College.

Steven Cobb, Mental Health Association executive director, gave a memorial for a recently deceased participant.

It was noted that by the end of September, the Mental Health Association will open a location in Dunkirk.

Lunch was prepared and served by members of First Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.
