FREDONIA – The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is the uplifting comedy “Poms,” starring Diane Keaton. It will be screened on Saturday, and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Official “Poms” movie merchandise will be given away through random drawings at each screening.

Martha (Keaton) is an introverted woman who moves to a retirement community that has shuffleboard, golf, bowling and other activities. Hoping to be left alone, she meets Sheryl (Jacki Weaver), a fun-loving neighbor who insists that they become best pals. After being pulled out of her shell, Martha and her new friend decide to form a cheerleading squad with their fellow residents. As the two women hold auditions, they soon learn that it’s never too late to follow your dreams, even when the odds are stacked against you.

James Verniere, in the Boston Herald, calls the film “a surprisingly fun and heartfelt old-age comedy with a funny and sad dark streak. (The) cast led by Keaton and spark plug Weaver is wonderful.”

Neil Pond, in Parade Magazine, says it has “an uplifting message about teamwork, friendship and not letting age be a barrier, of any kind.” Nell Minow, in the RogerEbert.com, says the film wonderfully conveys “both a sense of sisterhood, and the exquisite poignancy of the friendships that bloom as the end of life approaches.” Marisa Carpico, in The Pop Break, says “Keaton and the entire cast are having so much fun, only a stick in the mud could resist getting swept up in their joy.”

Rated PG-13 for some language/sexual references, “Poms” runs 1 hour, 31 minutes.
