‘Mom Tribe’ Is New Group At Mental Health Association

Karen Weis from the Jamestown Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant program, pictured left, and Michelle Colaiacovo of UPMC Chautauqua, right, are the main facilitators for “Mom Tribe.” The group for new and expectant mothers began meeting this month on Wednesday mornings at the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County.

“Mom Tribe” is the name chosen for the group that provides education and support for expecting and new mothers at the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County.

Michelle Colaiacovo of UPMC Chautauqua and Karen Weis from the Jamestown Community College occupational therapy assistant program are the main facilitators at the 11 a.m. meetings every Wednesday. Other professionals and mothers who have been through a pregnancy with a substance use disorder will also speak at the group.

A Mom Tribe poster notes the group is about “What to know as the baby grows.” Topics that will be covered include professional and peer support, education and advocacy, prenatal and postnatal support, effects of prescribed and unprescribed medication, navigation of community agencies and services, child development and milestones, and communicating with health professionals.

Arrangements are being worked on to provide child care. In the meantime, mothers can have a child with them at meetings.
