Fletcher Announces Science Fair Winners

Natalie David
Bladen Ence
Gillian Daniels

Fletcher Elementary School recently held its annual Science Fair headed by Fletcher’s Instructional Coach Stephanie David and Kindergarten Teacher Kara Benson.

The optional activity for UPK through fourth grade students displayed 34 projects in the gymnasium for fellow students and families. Three students were awarded exemplary project awards: first place: kindergartner Gillian Daniels (Which Sunscreen Gives the Best Protection?), second place: fourth grader, Natalie David (Which Popcorn Brand will Pop the Most Kernels and Leave the Fewest Kernels Unpopped?) and third place: third grader, Bladen Ence (Do Plants Grow Better By Listening to Music?).

Students were provided with a planning guide that included directions for setting up their presentation boards, scoring guidelines, grading guidelines and some websites that could be used for resources. Students worked on the projects at home creating a presentation board that included required information about their project: project title, question, hypothesis, materials, procedure, data, conclusion, observations and reflections.

Judges JPS science instructional coach Doug Foster and JPS STEAM coordinator Traci Thompson viewed and critiqued the projects using the grading guidelines. Every student that participated received a certificate, a Science Fair ribbon and a deck of 20 science experiment cards. All three winners received gold, silver and bronze medals.

The Fletcher PTA purchased the prizes for the Science Fair.
