Busti Historical Society To Meet June 5

The Busti Historical Society will meet Wednesday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Museum Building next to the mill.

At the May meeting, several topics of business were discussed. The main one was contracting for a coordinator or project manager to handle such tasks as education outreach, newsletter mailing, exhibit design, grant writing and online presence.

President Bob Schultz reported on the effort to buy an additional lawnmower through a state program.

Schultz also reported progress on restoration of the Miller House interior. Recent work has included two floors sanded, the parlor readied for papering, trim painted in the parlor, pantry shelves completed and damaged plaster and lath stripped from a small room.

The society held a work day and open house in connection with the countywide Museum Day on April 13. The following day was the regular third Sunday open grinding day. This was also an open house and work day. The mill stones operated perfectly following a repair and improved lubrication of the main bearing earlier this spring.

On May 15, an appreciation party was held in the mill itself for volunteers and demonstrators at last September’s Apple Festival.

Work accomplished in the past month also includes improved drainage and overflow interception near the meeting room door, further progress inside the miller house and removal of brush and small trees from the headrace. These had been obstructing the view of the remains of the dam abutments where a viewing walkway is planned. The lawn for the entire campus has been mowed several times.

Posters are already being placed and reservations forms circulated for the June 13 third annual Victorian dinner at the Victorian Hall in Busti. Victorian costume is optional but encouraged. Tasteful live music will be featured.
