Roger Tory Peterson Institute To Host Open House Dec. 1

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute will hold its annual holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

There will be free admission into the institute’s galleries, light refreshments and a chance to win a gift bag filled with unique items from the RTPI museum store. Guests will also have the opportunity to create bird-friendly ornaments for a $5 donation, take a stroll on RTPI’s lighted nature trail and roast marshmallows on the patio from 3 to 6 p.m. The event is part of Swedish Market Day in Jamestown – Julmarknad, organized by the Scandinavian Studies Program at Jamestown Community College.

RTPI is featuring Alberto Rey’s Extinct Birds Project. The poignant exhibition includes 18 original paintings of now extinct bird specimens. The 208-page, full-color Extinct Birds Project publication that accompanies the exhibition is a collaboration between Rey and designer Jason Dilworth and examines collecting practices, causes for extinction and the politics of categorizing endangered species. It also includes specific information about the 18 extinct bird specimens featured in the exhibit and their collectors, as well as an overview of where things stand at the brink of the next mass extinction period.

A visit to RTPI’s galleries during this event will also offer a glimpse of original artwork, artifacts and memorabilia from the Peterson collection — some of which were newly exhibited in 2018.

The open house is free and open to the public. For more information, visit rtpi.org or call 665-2473. The Roger Tory Peterson Institute is located at 311 Curtis St., Jamestown.
