YMCA To Offer Waterfront Lifeguarding Class Friday

The Jamestown YMCA will be offering an American Red Cross waterfront lifeguarding class from 5-9 p.m. Friday, June 15, and Saturdays and Sundays, June 16-17 and June 23-24, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day.

Students must attend all classes. It is the only class before summer.

All participants will need to successfully complete the pre-test to be permitted to take the course. The pre-test includes a 550-yard swim, recovering a brick, collecting submerged rings and treading water. The pre-test will be the first part of class on June 16.

Class size is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. The cost for the class is $235 for YMCA members and $285 for potential members. Class cost covers all supplies and certification fees.

Upon successful completion of this class, students will be certified in American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding 2017, First Aid, CPR-PR and AED. Students must be at least 15 years of age by the final day of class.

The YMCA will also offer an update and re-certification program for American Red Cross waterfront lifeguards. All lifeguards who need to re-certify need to participate in an update due to changes to the program. The recertification class will be held June 9. The cost is $100.

State law requires that all lifeguards renew their CPR certifications each year. Those who need their CPR Pro recertification can do so at the YMCA starting at 11:30 a.m. June 10. The cost for the class is $75.
