Lewis & Lewis Adds Beckerink

The law firm of Lewis & Lewis recently announced the addition of Laurie M. Beckerink as an associate attorney at their Jamestown and Olean offices.

Beckerink is a graduate of Clymer Central School (1998) and St. Andrews Presbyterian College (2002) where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Beckerink earned her Juris Doctor in 2005 from the University at Buffalo Law School. She was admitted to practice in the Courts of New York State in 2006 and is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Western District of New York.

Beckerink comes to Lewis & Lewis as a seasoned attorney, most recently serving as an assistant district attorney for Chautauqua County for the past seven years. Beckerink’s practice will be focused in civil litigation and worker’s compensation. Her extensive trial experience is a welcome addition to Lewis & Lewis.

The firm has five offices located in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Jamestown and Olean and is one of the largest firms representing injured parties in Western New York.

Honors Northwest

Northwest Savings Bank ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the Mid-Atlantic Region, according to the J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study.

The study, conducted quarterly from April 2013 to January 2014, analyzes the overall satisfaction customers have with their retail banking experience based on account activities, account information, facility, fees, problem resolution and product offering. Northwest received the highest satisfaction score in the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Northwest Savings Bank was also ranked highest from 2010 through 2012.

“Receiving our fourth award in five years from J.D. Power for being highest ranked in our six-state region is an incredible honor,” said Steven G. First Niagara Declares Dividend

BUFFALO – First Niagara Financial Group Inc. recently announced that the company’s board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 8 cents per share on outstanding FNFG common stock.

The company’s board of directors also declared a quarterly preferred stock dividend of $0.539063 per share on its fixed-to-floating rate perpetual non-cumulative preferred stock, Series B.

Both dividends were payable to shareholders of record on May 5.

Rummage Sale Begins Saturday

BEMUS POINT – The Lawson Center, 73 Lakeside Drive, Bemus Point will host a historic rummage sale at the Museum Treasure Mart this weekend. City BPU To Reopen Tuesday

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a holiday for BPU Solid Waste employees. Therefore, normal Monday garbage collection will take place on Tuesday, along with regular Tuesday pickup. Monday customers should not place garbage at the curb until after 6 p.m., Monday. The recyclables for the week will be corrugated cardboard, paper and box board. All trouble reports for BPU services, all hours, should be directed to 661-1640.

Service, March Planned Monday

Randall Lewis will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day service and program on Monday in the Fentonville Methodist Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. A short march to the Fentonville cemetery will follow at 11:30 a.m. for a memorial service led by the Frewsburg Legion Colorguards. All are welcome to attend.

Busti Veterans Asked To Attend

BUSTI – The Busti Hamlet Development Association is trying to find all current and former Busti residents who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. They are invited to join together on Monday to ride in the Busti Memorial Day parade on a seated trailer-style float. Veterans can attend in uniform or street clothes, with or without their ribbons and awards. Parade lineup begins at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the former New Beginnings Restaurant on Sugar Grove Road. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. Breakfast will be served in the Busti Fire Hall following the memorial service.

Benefit Planned For Today

CLYMER – A benefit for the family of Darwin Durlin and Mike Meeder will be held today at the Chautauqua Produce Auction Grounds, Route 474, North Clymer. There will be a horse pull with draft horses, haflingers and mini horses, with mini horses beginning at 9:30 a.m. At noon, a chicken barbecue, hot dogs and hamburgers will be available. Clam Bake Fundraiser Set

LAKEWOOD – The Lakewood American Legion SAL will host a chicken barbecue and clam bake benefit on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The proceeds will benefit the Quentin Schurman family. The Auxiliary will also be hosting a bake sale and 50/50. There will be music. Cost will be $8.50 per meal. It will be held rain or shine and takeout will be available. Canadian Vets To March Monday

Canadian veterans from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada will join veterans of American Legion Herman Kent Post 777 and Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 by taking part in a Memorial Day parade on Monday beginning at 10:45 a.m. The parade will leave from Southwestern Central High School and march to Sunset Hill Cemetery, where services will be held.

A planning meeting for the 55th reunion for the Southwestern Central School class of 1959 will be held Thursday at the Lakewood American Legion at 6:30 p.m. All classmates are invited to attend. The reunion will be held Saturday, July 19, at the North Harmony Senior Citizens Center.

Fenton To Close For Renovations

The Fenton History Center museum will be closed until May 28 at 10 a.m. The Fenton Mansion is undergoing a first-floor face lift and will not be able to entertain any visitors until Wednesday, May 28. The Hall House Research Center and administration offices for both the museum and research center are open as usual. Questions? Thrift Shop To Hold New Sale

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop at 409 Pine St. between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, Jamestown, announces the addition of Wednesdays for sales. New spring hours for sales and receiving are: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; receiving only Tuesday 9 a.m. to noon. Ballroom Dance Continues Tuesday

LAKEWOOD – The next session of Ballroom Dance is scheduled to begin Tuesday at the Lakewood YMCA. The session will run for six weeks and will cover a variety of dances. The class is open to all. Partners are not mandatory. Besides being fun, dancing is great cardiovascular exercise and uses all the major muscle groups. It encourages good posture and body alignment while strengthening your body’s core. Participants can also expect improved flexibility and agility. MS Rap Group

To Meet Today

Is there an upside to living with Multiple Sclerosis? Hundred Hugs Party Is Today

Operation Hundred Hugs will be holding a Card Signing Party at the Hotel Jamestown Building in the rec room from 1-5 p.m. today to say “thank you” to those serving in the military. The card party will have ready-made cards available for anyone to sign. There will also be construction paper and materials to make one’s own cards. The team is part of Operation Loving the Military out of Liberty, Pa., and was formed to be able to reach out to, love on, and support more and more of the veteran homes, rehabs, transitional centers and homeless shelters all over the country. The goal is to collect 100-plus thank-you cards to be sent to a different location every month. Everyone is welcome to come and sign cards, or make their own. Blood Bank To Host Blood Drives

Community Blood Bank will be holding several blood drives in the area before the holiday weekend. All eligible donors are encouraged to stop by and donate. The need for blood is constant. Legion To Hold Breakfast Sunday

The Herman Kent American Legion Post 777 will hold its monthly breakfast from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sunday. The post will have its full breakfast buffet with scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, french toast, sausage gravy and biscuits, danishes and the post’s three-egg omelets. The cost is $6 per person. Spring Concert Set For Sunday

On Sunday at 4 p.m., the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra will present its annual Spring Concert in the Jamestown High School Auditorium. The concert will feature guest soloist, Ron Mcentire performing the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Other selections the orchestra will perform include: “William Tell Overture,” by Rossini, “The Artists’ Life Waltz,” by Strauss and a medley of songs by the great jazz composer, Duke Ellington. Begins Friday

Fashion Show Set For Saturday

Water Agency To Meet Thursday

There will be a meeting of the Chautauqua County Water Agency on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan VFW, 2556 Route 20, Sheridan. CCWA was formed pursuant to Resolutions 211-13 and 246-13 of the Chautauqua County Legislature to evaluate water supply needs in northern Chautauqua County and recommend to the County Legislature the creation of county water district(s) as may be necessary in the best interest of the people of Chautauqua County.

Set For Saturday

ASHVILLE – The Open Meadows United Methodist Church will host a bake and rummage sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of the church at 3183 Open Meadows Road. Crafts, rummage items and homemade baked goods will be available.

Mediterranean Dinner Planned

A Mediterranean dinner will be held on Friday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m. This will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Jamestown, 1255 Prendergast Ave. near Buffalo Street. It is open to the public. The exotic cuisines of Greece, Italy, Spain and Africa will be featured. Food items will include Greek salad, pasta, falafel (fried patties made from ground chickpeas), humus and cous-cous salad. All food will be prepared by seasoned cooks from the church. Reservations received by Sunday will receive a $2 discount on the ticket price. The cost of the dinner is $20 per person, or $18 with advance reservations. Community Yard Sales To Be Held

The Mayville/ Chautauqua Community Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Communitywide Yard Sales for the Mayville and Chautauqua areas on Saturday, May 24. Rummage And Bake Sale Set

WESTFIELD – The United Methodist Church of Westfield, 101 E. Main St., Westfield, will hold a rummage and bake sale Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a bag sale beginning at noon.

To Meet May 13

Roast Chicken Meal Is Today

The Dewittville Hartfield United Methodist Church, route 430 and Meadows Road, Dewittville, will hold a roast chicken dinner today from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dinner will include one-half of a roast chicken, potato salad, baked beans, dessert and beverage. The cost is a donation of $8.

Registration For TOPS Is Today

Twenty-four TOPS 721 Jamestown members met recently and named best losers Cecelia Brisley, TOPS and Diane Anderson, KOPS. Barb Linza received free dues. Registration for the spring workshop in Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church, corner of South Main Street and Cole Avenue, will begin at 9 a.m. today. Anderson presented a program on proper ways to lose weight and 100 things to do instead of eating. The thought was that we have always had the power to change our lives by losing weight. It is just up to us to use that power we have to change our lives. Chapter weigh-in is 8:30-9:30 a.m. each Thursday, followed by a meeting in the Kidder UMC. For more information, call 763-4626.

Pet Loss Group To Meet Tuesday

The Chautauqua County Humane Society sponsored Pet Loss Bereavement Group meets Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the James Prendergast Library, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, in the second-floor conference room. The group is facilitated by Roberta Thompson, MSW; Maggie Irwin, LMSW; and Jennifer Morse, RVT, and meets the first Tuesday of each month.

Outdoor Club

To Row Sunday

On Sunday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will kayak/canoe the Clarion River. This will be a 6-mile float that will begin at the put-in 3 miles upstream from the Route 36 bridge in Cooksburg and end at the take-out at Gravel Lick Road. Participants will meet at Howe’s True Value at 12:30 p.m. or at the Cooksburg put-in at 1:30 p.m. Your boat will need a registration or launch permit, and PFDs. Salad Bar Lunch Set For May 10

The Jamestown Free Methodist Church, 515 E. Seventh St., Jamestown, will hold a women’s ”salad bar” lunch on Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., open to women of all ages. The theme of the lunch is ”Contentment: A Fragrant Offering to the Lord” and is presented by Heidi Payot. Reservations/sign-ups are requested; call 484-1542.

Chicken Dinner Set For Sunday

BEMUS POINT – Ellery Center Volunteer Fire Department, 4400 Dutch Hollow Road, Bemus Point, is having a chicken barbecue Sunday from noon until sold out. This dinner is a take-out dinner only. One can pre-order by calling 386-5381. Delivery can be arranged in the town of Ellery. The cost is $8 per adult and $6.25 for 12 and under. Dinner will include potatoes, apple sauce, coleslaw, dinner roll and dessert.
