CRCF Sets Event For Tuesday

Museum To Host Dinner Today

Genealogical Seminar Planned

DUNKIRK – The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society is hosting a seminar focusing on researching Family History on Saturday, April 26. The event will help people learn more about various free, online resources that can be used when researching their own family history. It will also provide important things to know when doing online research. Featured speakers include research specialist Rhonda Konig from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and Norman Carlson from the Fenton Historical Society in Jamestown. The daylong event will be run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Dunkirk on April 26 and will include morning refreshments and a lunch buffet. Kennedy Library Plans Activities

Pre-school story hour and the annual book sale are just two of the activities greeting spring at the Kennedy Free Library. Story hour for children ages 2-5 beginsthis Wednesday and continues every Wednesday until June from 11 a.m. to noon. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are not required. The library will also host its annual book and bake sale on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kennedy Fire Hall. Children’s books, fiction and nonfiction titles will be available. Marco Polo Auxiliary members will meet on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be hosted by Rita Ellis. Mary Racitano, president, hosted a recent meeting. A memorial was held for deceased members Josie Trippi, Jay Carlo and the mother of Ruth Boscia. Discussion was on the need for new members and baking for the monthly spaghetti dinners at the club. The Jamestown Dental Auxiliary is currently offering a scholarship to a female high school senior who is pursuing a career in the dental field. Kidder To Present New Book

BEMUS POINT – On Monday, Roland Kidder will present his new book “Backtracking on Brown Water: Retracing Life on Mekong Delta River Patrols” at the Bemus Point Library. The presentation is at 7 p.m. at 13 Main St. Copies will be available for sale and signing. Kidder, a local veteran, will speak of his experience returning to Vietnam 40 years after the war. DOT Announces Lane Closures

The state Department of Transportation will begin lane closures today on state Route 430, in the village of Mayville and town of Ellery. As a result, Route 430, between Honeysette Road and county Route 54, in the village of Mayville will be reduced to one lane. In addition, Route 430, between Driftwood Road and Abbott Park Drive, in the town of Ellery will be reduced to one lane. At both locations, traffic will alternate the use of one lane, controlled by temporary traffic signals. These lane closures will remain in effect until further notice. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

CRCF And RHJC To Host Kidder

The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and Robert H. Jackson Center are hosting a reception for Rolly Kidder’s latest book, “Backtracking in Brown Water” today at 4:30 p.m. at the Jackson Center. The event will feature a meet and greet, reflections from the author, and book signing. Paperback copies of the book will be available for $20 and hardcover copies for $30.

Fracking Program To Air Saturday

Glenn Wahl, JCC geologist, presented a program on high-volume hydrofracking at a talk sponsored by the League of Women Voters in February. Included in the presentation is a 37-minute film, “The Ethics of Fracking” by Pennsylvania filmaker Scott Cannon. The entire presentation, produced by Snowshoe Films, runs an hour and 39 minutes. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at noon and 6 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on April 4. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman and Westfield areas.

MAYVILLE – “Senior Report with Reed Powers” will have Walter Sedlmayer as the guest Saturday. Sedlmayer works with the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner Cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. KENNEDY – Kennedy First United Methodist Church is updating its church directory and invites all families to be a part of it. Photographs will be taken by Lifetouch. Since there are fewer places to get family pictures taken, this is an opportunity for families to do so. Each family will get a free 8-by-10-inch picture with no obligation to purchase any others. By having a portrait taken, the church is able to get additional pages or features added to the books. This does not obligate you to have your picture in the directory. Emily Dickinson was one of 19th-century America’s greatest and most prolific poets. Dickinson also boasts another impressive honor: a large number of her poems have been set to music by hundreds of composers. The Emily Dickinson Singers of SUNY Fredonia will be performing a sample of Dickinson poems set to music and a baked treat as part of The Big Read. Celoron-West Ellicott Seniors will meet on March 19 in the Herman Kent Legion Post at noon. Sue Schrecengost, Madelyn Olson and Pat Greathouse will be the committee. Ballroom Dance Session To Begin

Kathryn McCarthy, librarian at the Bemus Point Library, spoke on the founding of the library in 1908 and its progress throughout the years. Celebrating birthdays were Gene Norris, Rhinehart, Paul Samuelson, Lois Norris, Jean Telschow and Marlene Walrod. Mrs. Cheney closed the meeting with prayer.

Set For Tonight

The Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown and Chautauqua Opportunities will have a special Family Night tonight from 6:30-8 p.m. The first Thursday of every month is in collaboration with Chautauqua Opportunities and features a special “Dedicated Dads” activity, designed for male role models and the children in their lives. This can include dads, step-dads, grandfathers, uncles, cousins or neighbors. For March they will be making solar-powered robot bugs. All supplies will be provided and there is no charge to participate in this event.

Pancake Breakfast Set For Saturday

MAYVILLE – Cub Scout Pack 126 will have their 33rd annual pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Unlimited pancakes, sausage and drinks will be served at the Chautauqua Inn and Suites. Money earned from this fundraiser will be used to pay for outings and events, patches and pins, pack T-shirts and outings. Cub Scout Summer Camp at Camp Elk Lick in Smethport, Pa. is something the boys look forward to every year. The cost is roughly $200 per scout. Scouts will be setting up, serving and cleaning up to earn their way to camp. There will be door prizes as well as a Chinese auction. Winners will be announced every hour and do not need to be present to win. Please support the Cub Scouts while they serve the community with this service project. Channel 5 To Show Lectures

MAYVILLE – Robert Franklin’s Chautauqua lecture “Proclamations, Letters and Tweets” will be shown on Access Channel 5. The program will air at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on March 14. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. MAYVILLE – “Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from the State University at Fredonia. Hosted by Mike Igoe, the program will feature guest Kent Knappenberger. Knappenberger is a Westfield teacher who won the first Grammy Music Educator Award. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on March 14. Artists Group To Meet Tuesday

Lutheran Dietitian Adds Certification

Erica Richerson, registered dietitian at Lutheran has achieved board certification as a specialist in gerontological nutrition from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The academy is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

Richerson has met the rigorous requirements needed to design, implement and manage safe and effective nutrition strategies that promote the quality of life and heath for older adults.

“We are proud of Erica and her accomplishment,” said Tom Holt, Lutheran president and CEO. “She is truly a resident advocate and this certification is another way she shows that she wants to expand her knowledge and continue to give excellent care.”

Richerson earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Edinboro University and has been a registered dietitian at Lutheran for 12 years. “Nutrition plays such an important role in every aspect of a resident’s health from managing chronic diseases to fighting infections and improving their mental status,” she said. “Our team meets with each resident individually. I get to know their likes and dislikes and create a resident-centered meal plan, which is what I love about my work.”

She is a member of Morison’s Dining Services at Lutheran. Morrison Management Specialists is based in Atlanta and is the nation’s only food service company exclusively dedicated to providing food, nutrition and dining services to the health care and senior living communities.
