Conservancy’s Citizen Science Survey To

Take Place

Wednesday

The next session of the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy’s citizen science survey for invasive aquatic plants in Chautauqua Lake will take place on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The survey will cover part of the Chautauqua Lake Outlet, with participants launching from McCrae Point Park.  The session is part of a series of public informational sessions and on-water surveys held by the conservancy, with funding from the Chautauqua Lake and Watershed Management Alliance, throughout the summer. Attendees will learn how to differentiate beneficial, native aquatic plant species from invasive, problematic species and also learn what they as individuals and as communities can do to prevent the arrival and spread of new aquatic invasive species. Those interested can also participate in an on-water survey to search for and remove invasive plants. Participation is free, but pre-registration is required for the on-water programs as attendance is capped at 10 participants per session. Registration can be made by calling 716-664-2166 or emailing info@chautauquawatershed.org. Anyone joining the on-water training sessions will need to bring their own kayak or canoe and life jacket. More information and other survey dates can be on www.chautauquawatershed.org and the conservancy’s Facebook page.

Scherman To Present To

Historical Society

MAYVILLE — The public is invited to enjoy a living history presentation on “Mary Jemison, White Woman of the Genesee” that will be given by Tina Scherman, Leon Historical Society educator, at the next meeting of the Chautauqua Township Historical Society. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Sid Compton room of the Chautauqua Municipal Building, 2 Academy St., Mayville. Admission is free. In the spring of 1755 14-year-old Mary Jemison was captured by Shawnee Indians then later adopted by the Seneca and taken to the Genesee Valley of New York where she became fully adapted to the Seneca culture. Scherman will portray this remarkable woman and tell her story. A story that creates a historical and cultural perspective of the Senecas during a time period that includes both the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars.
