Thacker Part Of Wed. Lecture

CHAUTAUQUA — Chautauqua Institution’s fourth week of Interfaith Lectures focuses on “Ethics in a Technologically Transforming World?” which will examine the ethical, spiritual and religious dimensions of “new tech” at 2 p.m. each day. Jason Thacker, chair of research in technology ethics at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, gives a presentation based on his work, at the cross-section of human dignity, ethics, technology, and artificial intelligence. Talk On Big Tech Companies Set

Chautauqua Institution’s nine-week season features weekday lectures focusing on weekly cultural themes. Week Four examines “The Ethics of Tech: Scientific, Corporate and Personal Responsibility,” in which speakers in the 10:45 a.m. Chautauqua Lecture Series program explore the tremendous and sometimes harmful impact Big Tech companies and their products have on society. Rana el Kaliouby is a computer scientist, technologist, entrepreneur and business leader who will share her mission to humanize technology with artificial intelligence that understands not just our commands, but our facial expressions, body language and emotional states. Assembly online began with a beta test version launched on June 22, with the testing phase continuing through August 31, allowing guests to sign up for a 90-day free trial at chq.org/2020-assembly. Following the 90-day trial period, membership will be $3.99 per month.

Historical Society Sets Yard Sale

BLOCKVILLE — The Harmony Historical Society will be having a one day yard sale Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as the society’s quilt show and a chicken barbecue. More details will be advertised closer to that date. Donations for the yard sale can be dropped off at the society on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

American Legion To Meet Today

At 7 p.m. today, the Herman Kent Post American Legion will hold its monthly meeting. The Sons and Auxiliary members are welcome to attend. The Ladies Auxiliary will be serving dinner from 5-6:30 p.m.

Sewer Board To Convene Today

MAYVILLE — The North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District will meet at 4:15 p.m. today, at 2 Academy St., in the Chautauqua town meeting room. Any member of the public that plans on attending must call the district office at 753-7787 so members can plan for social distancing. Masks must be worn for public safety.

Carroll Historical Society Open

FREWSBURG — The Carroll Historical Society, 5 W. Main St., Frewsburg, is now opened to the public every Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and will also open throughout the week and Sunday afternoons by appointment for individuals or small groups. The historical society features collections of old quilts, old-style clothing, a shingle saw blade with a video on how it operated and the Myers Library 90-year anniversary display and much more. For an appointment, call 569-5365 ext. 8. Admission is free.
