Ice Cream Social To Be Held

The Historic Marvin House in Jamestown will host an ice cream social and garden party Saturday from 4-6 p.m. Attendees will be able to purchase several sweet options, including strawberry shortcake, ice cream sundaes, old fashion ice cream sodas and homemade baked goods. The volunteers have put in long hours to preserve the garden around the Marvin House and want to share them with their members and the public. Sit back relax and enjoy this beautiful garden. Reservations are appreciated but not required by calling 488-6206. Guests are reminded to wear face coverings and practice social distancing.

Legion Post 149 Is Now Open

For Take-Out

FLUVANNA — The American Legion ILS Post 149, 364 Fluvanna Ave., Jamestown, is now open Tuesday through Saturday from 3-9 p.m. The Sons of AMVETS 726 at the post also has Sunday chicken barbeques, take-out only, from noon until sold out.

Friesen To Talk About Music

The third week of Chautauqua Institution’s Interfaith Lecture Series, held at 2 p.m., is themed “Art: A Glimpse into the Divine,” which will explore how art underlies and underlines the commonalities of human existence. On Wednesday, Eugene Friesen discusses his artistry as a cellist and composer and creates a “prayer in concert.” Friesen is a four-time Grammy Award winner and has worked and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Martin Sexton, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Dar Williams, Will Ackerman and Dream Theater.

Rose To Speak About Her Work

Chautauqua Institution’s third week of lectures examines “Art and Democracy,” in which speakers in the 10:45 a.m. Chautauqua Lecture Series program explore the role of art and artists in an active democracy — how they’re able to raise the social consciousness, challenge the status quo and engage communities large and small toward meaningful action. On Wednesday, Tricia Rose will speak on her work as director of Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, which assembles scholars and practitioners for various programs and initiatives that foster creative approaches to entrenched social problems through research, scholarship, education, performance and art. Assembly online began with a beta test version launched on June 22, with the testing phase continuing through August 31, allowing guests to sign up for a 90-day free trial at chq.org/2020-assembly. Following the 90-day trial period, membership will be $3.99 per month.

History Center To Reopen Today

The Hall House Research Library at the Fenton History Center will reopen on today. Access will be limited to four researchers at a time, so Fenton History Center officials recommend researchers call and make an appointment prior to their arrival. Social distancing will be observed, masks are required and there will be strict sanitizing guidelines. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. To make an appointment, call 664-6256.

County Panel To Meet Today

The Chautauqua County Legislature’s Human Services Committee will meet at 5 p.m. today. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the meeting will be held by remote access. The Public may view the meetings by accessing the live stream on the county Facebook page. Public comments must be emailed in advance to the Clerk of the Legislature at tampiok@co.chautauqua.ny.us.

School Board To Hold Meeting

The Bemus Point School Board will hold special meetings today and Thursday, both at 5:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 150 W. Fourth St., Jamestown. The board will be adjourning to executive session in both meetings to discuss its superintendent search. No action will be taken.

Dr. Spann To Speak At Martz

The Martz-Kohl Observatory will welcome Dr. James Spann, space weather lead, Heliophysics Division, NASA, as a virtual guest speaker via Zoom at 7:30 p.m on today. Spann will give an overview of the Heliophysics missions including their involvement in the NASA Artemis program to the moon, and the purview beyond to Mars. Information and a link to join the Zoom speaking event is located on the Martz-Kohl Observatory website at martzobservatory.org/zoom/. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the observatory remains closed to the public.
