BPU To Replace Water Valves

Jamestown Board of Public Utilities water crews will replace two water valves today in Lakewood along Fairmount Avenue across from Cinema 8 Theaters. Motorists will see slowed traffic due to the work. Beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday, water will be off for about two hours at Fairmount and Lowe avenues all the way to Sunset Cove in North Harmony; and on Summit and Lowe avenues to Fairmount Avenue and Big Tree Road. Once work is completed, widespread discolored water will be seen in Lakewood, Cottage Park, Ashville and North Harmony. Residents should not do laundry until water clears which can take 12-24 hours.

Town Board Meeting Canceled

ASHVILLE — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Harmony Town Board meeting scheduled for today has been canceled. Anyone with questions is asked to call the town clerk at 782-4568.

Virtual Applicant Briefings Set

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County officials have recently been notified by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services about virtual applicant briefings that will be held to discuss Federal Emergency Management Agency funding available to eligible entities for COVID-19. The Office of Disaster recovery will be holding nine briefings from Tuesday through April 17 that are available to state agencies and authorities, local governments and private non-profits. Each briefing will be held via WebEx and will last approximately one hour. The sessions will provide guidance on federal funding available under the COVID-19 major disaster declaration (DR-4480), which was issued by President Donald Trump on March 20. It will discuss eligibility standards and the types of expenditures that are reimbursable under this declaration. The current COVID-19 FEMA disaster grant can provide funding for actions taken before, during and following a disaster to save lives, protect public health and ensure the safety of citizens.

Commencement Moved To Aug. 8

The State University of New York at Fredonia has moved its 2020 commencement ceremonies to Saturday, Aug. 8, Dennis L. Hefner, interim president, said in an email to the campus community Monday. Members of Fredonia’s Class of 2020 received a survey of various dates as alternatives to the originally planned date of May 16. The vote was overwhelming in favor of Aug. 8. Nearly 60% of the senior class participated in the vote, and all suggestions submitted through the survey have been forwarded to the Commencement Planning Committee.

Waste Site Opening Delayed

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities yard waste site opening, scheduled for Saturday, has been delayed until further notice due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. New York state officials emphasize daily that only essential workers should be on duty and that New Yorkers should remain safe by sheltering at home. The BPU solid waste employees currently are operating with full staffing in place as essential workers for weekly collection of garbage and recycling products only. Like other similar services across the city, yard waste collection is deemed non-essential. Collection of BPU ward waste bags was suspended until further notice on March 19 due to COVID-19 concerns. The opening of the yard waste site for the season will be announced a soon as it is approved to operate.
