Winter Weather Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Thursday. It includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario and southern Erie counties. The region could see 3 to 6 inches of snow, with accumulation expected to be mixed with sleet and freezing rain. “Plan on slippery road conditions,” the weather service said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”

Backyard Bird Count Event Set

FALCONER — The Falconer Public Library will be hosting an “Introduction on How to Participate in the 2020 Great Backyard Bird Count” today from 5:30-6 p.m. There will be a guided walk that will take place at the Falconer Park on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Register at the library for the walk by noon on Friday by calling 665-3504.

Fire Auxiliary To Meet Feb. 18

GERRY — The Gerry Volunteer Fire Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gerry Fire Hall. Dinner will be severed and the meeting will follow after the meal. New officers will be installed and other business will be discussed. All members are asked to attend and new members are welcome to join.

Historical Society To Hold Earhart Portrayal Event

BUSTI — The Busti Historical Society announced it will bring Lorraine Cole to the Busti Federated Church, 825 Mill St., Busti, on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. to portray Amelia Earhart, an American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. She disappeared on July 2, 1937, at age 39 over the Pacific Ocean en route to Howland Island. The public is welcome to attend, and admission is by donation. Refreshments will be served. The Busti Federated Church is handicapped accessible.

County Fair To Award Several Scholarships

The Chautauqua County Fair announced that 10, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and students enrolled in college. The New York Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York State Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarship. The qualifying students must be active at the fair or with the Showpeople’s Association. All applicants from the county must submit their applications through the fair or NYSSA no later than April 3. Information is available at the fair office, P.O. Box 191 Dunkirk, NY 14048, through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County or from local high school offices. Applications must be printed and completed from the web at nyfairs.org. For more information, call 366-4752.

Dance Event To Be Held Feb. 21

The Jamestown Community Third Friday Dance will be held Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at Tree of Life Lutheran Church, 825 Forest Ave., Jamestown. Live music will be provided by Viol Habits and caller is Joe Kwiatkowski. No experience or partner necessary, and admission is $5. Next month Bonnie Loch Fiddlers will play and in April Fiddulac will come from south of Erie to play.
