Impaired Driving Crackdown Stops 30 Motorists

MAYVILLE — A statewide Thanksgiving Enforcement Crackdown targeting impaired driving resulted in 30 motorists being stopped, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. Several of those drivers were charged and issued summonses. The enforcement, which involved the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and local police agencies, took place from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1. It was funded by a 2019-20 grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and is part of a national crackdown effort to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths. “Removing intoxicated drivers from Chautauqua County roadways is one of our top priorities,” Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone said in a statement. “If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Drunk drivers not only put themselves in danger, they threaten everyone who shares the road with them.”

Cuomo Vetoes Bill To Allow Electric Scooters

Gov. Andrew Cuomo vetoed a bill Thursday to allow electric scooters and bikes statewide. Cuomo’s veto message said the bill overwhelmingly passed by lawmakers this year didn’t include enough safety measures, such as a helmet requirement. Lawmakers may try to pass a bill with more safety measures next year. Cuomo said electric bikes and scooters must be regulated to protect public safety and said he looks forward to working with lawmakers on the issue in 2020. Meanwhile, e-scooter manufacturer Lime and environmental advocates and municipal supporters have argued the bill fits into New York’s push to address climate change. The vetoed bill would have allowed local communities to regulate or ban e-scooters. Bill supporters said thousands of food delivery workers in New York City rely on e-bikes, some of which are illegal when used on city streets.
