History Fair Adds Karaoke Contest

SINCLAIRVILLE — The Sinclairville History Fair has added a karaoke contest to this year’s event. The contest will take place at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 in the gazebo in the park. Each singer will be judged and there will be $300 in cash prizes awarded. There is no entry fee but contestants must register in advance. The contest is limited to 20 contestants. Disaster Training Workshop Set

BUSTI — Area residents are invited to an American Red Cross disaster training workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The workshop is cosponsored by the Hazeltine Public Library and the Busti Fire Department and will be held at the fire hall. The Busti Fire Hall is located at 886 Mill Road and is handicapped-accessible. The training is presented by the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross and is designed to help residents prepare for and recover from natural or man-made disasters. The 90-minute course begins at 6:30 p.m. and is designed to increase awareness and cover aspects of preparedness, how to prepare your household, where to get more information and the steps to take to recover from a disaster. The training is free and open to all but reservations are requested by calling the library at 487-1281.

Community Dance Is Slated

The first Jamestown Community Dance will be on Friday, Sept. 20, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Tree of Life Church, 825 Forest Ave., Jamestown. Various dances will be taught including contra, square, reels, mixers and Scandinavian. There is no experience or partner necessary. The caller will be Joe Kwiatkowski from Fredonia and there will be live music. The Jamestown Community Dance will continue to meet on the third Fridays of every month. Admission is $5. and children under the age of 10 are free. A ight snack is provided. For more information, call 489-4646.

PVCS Board To Meet Sept. 18

SOUTH DAYTON — The Pine Valley Central School Board of Education will hold executive sessions on Wednesday, Sept. 18, for the purpose of reviewing applicant folders, and Monday, Sept, 30; Tuesday, Oct. 1; and Wednesday, Oct. 2, to conduct preliminary interviews for the position of superintendent. Meetings will be held at 7 p.m. each night in the board room of the elementary school. The Thursday, Oct. 3, meeting has been canceled.

JCC Names New Band Director

Christopher Wakefield has been named director of Jamestown Community College’s concert band. Wakefield, a Jamestown High School graduate, also directs the band program at Clymer Central School. JCC’s concert band is open to JCC students and community members. Wakefield will also direct the pit orchestra for JCC’s musicals. Wakefield earned bachelor’s degrees at Niagara University and Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree at DePaul University. Prior to joining the faculty at Panama in 2015, he taught at schools in Chicago and Evanston, Ill.. He is a member of the Chautauqua County Music Teachers Association board of directors and has performed with the Living Christmas Tree Orchestra, Jamestown Area Community Orchestra, Dave Gallando Big Band, and the Thursday Morning Brass/Dixie Lakesiders.
