YMCA To Offer Lifeguard Class

Due to the shortage of certified lifeguards in the Jamestown area, the Jamestown Y will be offering a February lifeguarding class. This class will train and certify students in ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR-PR, First Aid and AED. The Y will be offering this class at the downtown branch and the class will start Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will continue Feb. 17 to Feb. 22 from noon-6 p.m. Students must attend all classes. Cost is $235 for YMCA members and $285 for potential members. Registration is currently ongoing and class size is limited. This will be the only certification class offered before June. All participants will need to successfully complete the pre-test to be permitted to take the course The pre-test includes a 550 yard swim, recovering a brick, collecting submerged rings and treading water.

Spire To Host Winter Sock Hop

The Spire will host a winter dance party to pay homage to Don McLean as well as Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson on Saturday at the Spire’s Odyssey Hall, 316 E. Fourth St., Jamestown. Tickets can purchased for $12 at inspirejamestown.com or $15 the day of. Doors open at 8 p.m. Sock Hop with golden oldies by these four stars as well as other great songs from their immortal era of rock and roll preformed live by The Spire’s house band, “In Crowd.”

Martin Named

To Dean’s List

Kellen H. Martin, a Cattaraugus Little Valley High School graduate, was named to the Dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester at the State University of New York at Cortland. Martin is studying bio-medical science at SUNY Cortland. Martin also competes with the indoor and outdoor track and field team.

Artist Showcase Begins Sunday

LAKEWOOD — Artists from the Aspire of Western NY iXpress Art Program are hosting an exhibit of their works beginning Sunday at Ryders Cup, 28 Chautauqua Ave., Lakewood. This diverse exhibit features works by artists with physical and developmental disabilities and is part of their ongoing “Aspiring Artists” series. The exhibit is on display for a month and contains acrylic, watercolor and mixed media pieces. The artwork displayed is available for purchase with the proceeds supporting the artists and the iXpress art program. Aspire is a not-for-profit located in Lakewood and provides services to children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

Music Studio Is

Recognized

The Community Music Project’s “Children’s Music Studio” has been recognized for its long-standing commitment to the Musikgarten philosophy and current offering of four or more levels of classes utilizing the Musikgarten Music and Movement Series, Children’s Music Studio was presented this award for its 2016-17 season. The teachers, Susan Caster and Danica Olson-Walter, make use of the internationally renowned Musikgarten curriculum. CMS is now accepting registrations for the next session, which runs Jan. 31 to May 2019 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Lutheran Campus, Jamestown.
