Lawn Care Bids Now Accepted

AARP Driving Course Planned

LITTLE VALLEY – Little Valley United Methodist Church is hosting a six-hour AARP Driver Safety Program on Monday and Wednesday. Classes will be held in the church fellowship hall at 109 Court St. from 6-9 p.m. each evening. The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Drivers of all ages will benefit from this course. Al Ormond will be the instructor for these sessions. Support Group To Meet Monday

The Jamestown Bariatric Support Group will meet on Monday from 6-7 p.m. in the Jamestown Prendergast Library Fireplace Room, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, second floor. An elevator is available for access to the second floor and parking is free. Marshall B. Greenstein will speak at 6 p.m. His topic will be the psychological part of bariatric surgery followed by a question and answer period. A discussion meeting follows the presentation. The purpose of this support group meeting is to connect participants with other pre-op and post-op patients and share similar experiences, and to also obtain friendly advice and useful tips. County Road 6 To Close Monday

LEON – The Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works will close County Road 6 (Leon Road) just east of Alderbottom Road to Fancher Road in the town of Leon to repair flood damages. The closure will take place Monday. A detour will be posted.

BUFPEX 2015 Set For March 8

The 150th anniversary of the ending of the Civil War will be the theme of BUFPEX 2015, Buffalo’s largest and oldest stamp show, on March 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the VFW Leonard Post, 2450 under the sponsorship of the 100-member Buffalo Stamp Club. Fifteen dealers will be available to sell a wide variety of stamps and related collectables, in addition to numerous exhibits of unusual and interesting stamps. The United States Post Office will also have representatives on hand to sell current stamps. Admission, parking and door prizes are all free of charge. Refreshments will be available for sale. The junkyard license for BKG Repair, located on Railroad Avenue, was approved. Melissa Davis presented her monthly statement of the supervisor for January to the board. WESTFIELD – Westfield Senior Citizens will meet March 12 at noon in the Westfield YWCA. The meal will be catered by Union Relief. Volunteers from the YWCA will present a program on the history of the Westfield ”Y.” The group met for a potluck dinner recently. Following the meeting, members played games of bingo.

The Jamestown Board of Education will hold a 2015-16 budget work session from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday in the board room, 197 Martin Road. The work session will allow the opportunity for board members to receive more information on budget drivers, how they affect the JPS budget and to provide feedback to administrators before the first 2015-16 budget draft is presented at a future board meeting. Westfield Auxiliary To Meet March 3

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host its soup supper from 5-7 p.m. March 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield. The dinner features an array of 15 hot soups. Those attending can try one or all of the soups and fill up their bowl as many times as they like. To round out the meal, there will be bread, a beverage and homemade pie or cake for dessert. Snowshoe Hike Set For Saturday

ASHVILLE – The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy and Evergreen Outfitters will be holding a snowshoe hike Saturday at CWC’s Dobbins Woods Preserve on Bly Hill Road in Ashville from 10 a.m. to noon. Hikers will meet at the Evergreen Outfitters store (4845 Route 474 in Ashville) at 10 a.m., then carpool to the preserve for the hike. The cost for the event is $15, including rentals or $5 for those who have their own gear. The fee includes an experienced guide, hot chocolate and a snack. Her presentation will begin with a travelogue to visually orient the audience to the jungle and highlands of Peru. She will also speak on threats to the Amazon rainforest and its indigenous peoples and discuss why these concerns are of global importance. Frewsburg Pre-K Registration Set

Registration for students eligible for the Universal Pre-K program and kindergarten for 2015-16 school year will be held Monday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 3, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1-2:30 p.m. Mrs. Dawn Ekstrom, school nurse, will be registering new students. To be eligible for UPK, a child must be 4 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2015. To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2015. Water Main Break Causes Turbulence

A water main break repair on Hunt Road near Cobbe Circle on Thursday has caused discolored water for BPU Water customers in the vicinity of the break. Customers should be on the look-out for discolored water through this afternoon and should avoid doing laundry until the system has had time to clear.

Seniors To Meet For Tureen Dinner

Jamestown Senior Center members will meet on Feb. 24 for a tureen dinner. Those persons attending should take their table service. Cookies and coffee were furnished by Tanglewood Manor when the seniors met there recently. Shirley Vandenburg opened the meeting and welcomed new members Karen Ross and Arvella McKotch. A flag salute was given and Joanne Hoglund led in song. All members attending were reminded to pay dues. Seniors were also reminded to make their reservations for the show ”For Better or Worse” which will be held in the Station Theater in Erie on March 18. The cost is $72.25 per person. Discussion was about a trip in September to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. or Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and Smokey Mountains shows. Seniors interested should call with their preference. Winter Bag Sale Runs Until March

The St. James Thrift Store, 141 Institute St., Jamestown, will hold a winter bag sale each Wednesday and Friday during February and March from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; buy one bag for $2 and get one free. PV Board Seeks New Members

Due to resignations, Pine Valley Central School has two vacancies on their board of education. Bridge League Names Winners

Jane Roos and Beth Green took first place honors on Feb. 5 at the regular weekly game of the Jamestown Area Bridge League. Bill Everts and Barbara Schuckers finished second. The league plays on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Comfort Today, 17 Gifford Ave., West Ellicott. There is ample parking in the Tanglewood lot across the street. Busti Town Board To Meet Tuesday

The Busti Town Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday will be held at the Town of Busti Highway Building, 3646 Lawson Road, Jamestown, at 6:45 p.m. In anticipation of the 2015 election, the town of Busti is accepting letters of interest for the position of Town Council. To Ski Sunday

On Sunday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will cross-country ski and have an outdoor cookout at Chapman State Park. For the cross-country ski, participants will meet at Pavilion No. 2 at 1 p.m. Those attending the outdoor cookout should bring a dish to pass as well as their own table service. The 2015 Winter Festival Treasure Hunt Medallion has been found at the William Huntley Bandstand in Silver Creek, N.Y. NASCAR Race Trip Planned

SUGAR GROVE, Pa. – The Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department will take a bus trip to the NASCAR race at Richmond International Speedway on April 25-26. The cost is $250 a person and includes transportation, ticket for the race, tailgate food and an overnight hotel for Saturday night. Poker Run To Benefit Starflight

MAPLE SPRINGS – Several area organizations are sponsoring the fifth annual snowmobile poker run benefiting Starflight on Sunday, Feb. 15, starting at the Vikings Lake Park in Maple Springs. The best poker hands can win up to $1,000 with additional prizes to be awarded. The entry fee is $30 a player. Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon at the Bemus Point Golf Course, Lakeview Hotel in Mayville and Feegan’s Witch Kitch in Sinclairville. Church Names New Missionary

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 851 Forest Ave., Jamestown, announced that Porter Bramwell will serve as a missionary at the church. He is the son of Scott and Kym Bramwell of Sierra Vista, Ariz. While here, he hopes to bring as many souls to the knowledge of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and spread the truth of church. When asked his thoughts of Jamestown, he said it is very cold. His home is in southern Arizona and is 30-40 degrees warmer.

JCC Board To Meet Tuesday

The Jamestown Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Hamilton Collegiate Center boardroom. There will be videoconferencing to the Cattaraugus County Campus and North County Center boardrooms. The public is welcome to attend.

Support Group Meetings Set

The Alzheimer’s Association monthly Caregiver Support Group will meet Tuesday from 1-2:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at the JAMA Building, 15 S. Main St. in Jamestown. An evening monthly caregiver support group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Fluvanna Community Church on Fluvanna Avenue Extension. The groups are for anyone who is caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia related diagnoses. For more information, call 483-5448.

Celoron Legion Plans Events

Celoron American Legion Herman Kent Post 777, 26 Jackson Ave., will feature Refuge, a country-southern rock band out of Erie, Friday, Feb. 13. On Saturday, Feb. 14, Smokehouse will provide the entertainment. A dinner for two special will be offered on Valentine’s Day from 4:30-8:30 p.m., featuring food from renowned chef Bob Sargent. Members and guests are welcome.

Church To Hold Breakfast Feb. 14

The Ripley United Methodist Church, 84 W. Main St., Ripley, will hold an all-you-can-eat-and-drink breakfast on Feb. 14 from 7:30-11 a.m. Included will be pancakes, sausage, bacon, made to order eggs and toast including omelets, fried potatoes, biscuits and sausage gravy, orange juice and coffee. The cost is $6 per person. All proceeds will benefit Outreach Ministries.

Legion To Host Feb. 14 Dinner

The Frewsburg American Legion Samuel Derby Post 556 will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Dinner Comedy Theater event on Saturday, Feb. 14. Featuring Howard Mincone, the dinner theater will be followed by dancing and music. The cost for dinner and the show is $29.95 plus tax per person and includes a dinner salad, baked potato and a brownie or carrot cake. The entree choices are 12-oz. prime rib, crab-stuffed haddock or cranberry-stuffed chicken breast. A kids menu is available for $12.95 and consists of choice of chicken tenders or grilled cheese and french fries, and includes applesauce and choice of dessert. Grads Needed For SWCS All 60s

LAKEWOOD – Classmates from any of the 1960-1970 classes at Southwestern Central School are needed to join the committee to help plan an all 60s class reunion. Eleanor Esch, founder of the Cassadaga Food Pantry, will be celebrating her 98th birthday on Sunday. Esch, a longtime community activist, continues to be involved with the food pantry. Her volunteer spirit extended to many other Cassadaga civic organizations, such as Kiwanis Club, where she served as president. Esch was also a supporter and member of the former Cassadaga Baptist Church. Any Jamestown High School senior who plans to participate in the 2015 graduation ceremony at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater on June 26 is required to wear a cap and gown. If a student will be a member of the JHS 2015 graduating class and has not yet paid for his or her cap and gown, the last opportunity is Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the JHS School Counseling Conference Room. The cost is $25.

JPS Budget

Sessions Set

The Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education will hold its 2015-16 budget work sessions from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Jefferson Middle School auditorium, and Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the board room, 197 Martin Road. The work sessions will allow the opportunity for board members to receive more information on budget drivers, how they affect the district budget and to provide feedback to administrators before the first 2015-16 budget draft is presented at a future board meeting. The public is welcome to attend the board’s budget work sessions. The Jamestown Board of Education will also hold its regularly scheduled board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

RANDOLPH – The Randolph Central School District will hold a parent/community forum at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the high school auditorium. The topic for this forum is preparation for pre-kindergarten. The public is welcome to attend.

Beekeepers To Meet Thursday

Ride-In To Be Held Sunday

STOCKTON – The Snowmobile Clubs of Chautauqua County will hold the annual ride-in from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chautauqua County Firemen’s Grounds, Stockton, at Junction CH108 of Trail C4 and C4B. The ride in will also include ”A Taste of Chautauqua Trails” featuring a sample of several signature dishes from area restaurants and taverns. Trail grooming equipment will be on display. If trails are closed, the event is canceled.

Chicken Dinner Set For Sunday

SUGAR GROVE, Pa. – AMVETS Post 50 in Sugar Grove will host a chicken and biscuit dinner on Sunday at noon. The cost is $7, and the public is welcome. A bake sale will also take place. Donations for the bake sale are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the post on Saturday or the day of the event. All proceeds will benefit disabled veterans to hunt at LEEK Hunting and Mountain Preserve located near Coudersport, Pa.

Pre-Licensing Course Set

FREWSBURG – A five-hour pre-licensing driving course will be held at Frewsburg High School on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 9-10, from 6-8:30 p.m. The cost is $25. Pre-register by calling the guidance office at 569-7026 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those calling to register should make sure they have their permit on hand.
