Chicken Dinner Set For Thursday

Day Of Prayer Set For Thursday

The 63rd annual National Day of Prayer is scheduled for Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at Tracy Plaza in Jamestown. This year’s prayer effort will have profound significance for the country as gatherers celebrate the theme: One Voice, United in Prayer. Area pastors from several denominations will lead those attending to seek the Lord’s healing and renewed power in families, government and world leaders. To further highlight the theme, Romans 15:6 has been chosen as the National Day of Prayer Scripture for this year: “So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Rummage Sale Begins Thursday

The Creche organization will be holding its annual Spring Rummage Sale on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a Bag Sale on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale will be held, as in the past, at First Congregational Church, The Spire, 316 E. Fourth St. in Jamestown. There is on- and off-street parking near the church. The sale presents a wide selection of quality household items, toys and clothing for the entire family. Spring Sale Begins Thursday

Community Helping Hands’ spring sale will begin Thursday at the Gateway Center, 31 Water St., Jamestown. Bikes, lawn furniture, sports equipment and more will be available. Alzheimer’s Assn. To Hold Class

DUNKIRK Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a progressive and fatal brain disease that is the most common form of dementia. “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease” is a free class, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter, for anyone who would like to know more about the disease and related dementias. Republicans To Hold Breakfast

GERRY – The Gerry Republican Committee is holding a pancake and eggs fundraising breakfast Saturday at the Gerry Firehall. Breakfast will be served from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and the cost is $7 per person. Now Available

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Employee Benevolent Association is accepting applications for a 2014 scholarship award worth $500. The scholarship is available to any high school senior planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field. Applicants must be residents of Cattaraugus County. Masonic Lodge To Hold Dinner

Thrift Shop To Reopen Today

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop at 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is reopening today with a “new” line of spring and summer clothing in all departments. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Off-street parking is available in the church parking lot off of East Fifth Street. Proceeds are used for outreach in the community. The shop is operated by an all-volunteer local staff including many from RSVP.

Fracking Forum To Air Saturday

Chautauqua County Legislators recently held an informational meeting for lawmakers on the controversial subject of high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing for methane gas. The March 19 legislative meeting was filmed by the Mayville-based film group, Snowshoefilms, for Channel 5 Public Access TV. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 12:50 and 6:50 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on May 2. Thule Lodge To Hold Meeting

BEMUS POINT – The Thule Lodge, 4123 Pancake Hill Road, Bemus Point, will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the lodge. Following the meeting will be the annual Easter brunch known as the “egg sexa” meaning foods made with eggs. The lodge has completed some of its renovations and members are welcome to visit the lodge during the meeting and brunch to see the completed work. Thule Lodge, now in its 107th year in the Jamestown/Bemus Point area, began as a social club for Swedish immigrants. The lodge continues to preserve the Swedish heritage through events and activities. New members are welcome.

Korean Banquet Set For Saturday

FREDONIA – The Korean International Student Society (KISS) will host its annual Korean Banquet on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. There will be a variety of Korean food favorites including Bulgogi, Je-yuk-bok-um, Japchae, Mat-tang, Tang-su-yuk, and bean sprout soup, as well as many Korean side dishes. The event will also feature several musical performances. Tickets are on sale at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center, $9 for students and $14 for the general public. Earth Day Hike Set For Saturday

Chautauqua Rails to Trails will sponsor a hike commemorating Earth Day on Saturday at 10 a.m., beginning at the Titus Road trailhead. The hike can be either 3 or 6 miles long, as determined by the participants. Les Johnson, past president of Rails to Trails, will lead the hike. Library Program Begins In May

FINDLEY LAKE – Beginning in May, the Findley Lake Community Library will begin a new children’s program. The group will meet from 6-7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. The program will offer a variety of activities including science experiments and arts and crafts. At the start of each session the group will read a book that ties in to the activities that follow.

Planning Board To Meet Thursday

Driving Course Begins Thursday

SINCLAIRVILLE – There are still some openings in the AARP Driver Safety Class being held at the South Stockton Wayside Chapel, 5537 Route 380, Sinclairville on Thursday and Friday. The class is open to any New York state driver of any age. Participants are eligible to receive an insurance discount and point reduction upon successful completion of the two-day class. The class runs 9 a.m. to noon both days and participants must attend both days in their entirety. Cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-AARP members. Checks are the only form of payment accepted and should be made payable to AARP. Camp Street Work Begins Soon

Jeffrey Lehman, city director of Public Works, announced that the city will be reconstructing Camp Street from May Street to Hebner Street this spring/summer. Construction is scheduled to begin within the next two weeks. The Board of Public Utilities will be replacing the water main and water service connections to all residences as the first phase of the project. The street will be restricted to one-way traffic (westbound), with the street closed to all but local traffic during normal working hours when work is underway. Upon completion of the water main, the DPW will finalize construction. As always, motorists should use extra caution in construction areas.

Food Truck Changes Dates

SINCLAIRVILLE – Dates for the Sinclairville Food Express truck have been changed from the second Monday of the month to the fourth Wednesday of the month. Library To Forgive Overdue Fines

The Fluvanna Library, 3532 Fluvanna Ave. Extension, will forgive fines during National Library Week beginning Monday. Patrons who visit the library and have overdue materials on the accounts will have them forgiven during the week. The library is also holding a “Guess our circulation for 2013” contest. Whoever comes closest guessing the total number of books, DVDs, videos, magazines and e-books check out in 2013 will win a gift basket with barbecue and picnic items. The contest will run through April 30.

Westfield To Begin Hydrant Flushing

WESTFIELD – The village of Westfield Water Department will flush hydrants in the water districts during the weeks April 14 through May 22 – Monday through Friday – from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. They will start at the highest point – the south – and proceed to the lowest end. The water will be slightly discolored and caution should be taken in regards to washing clothes. Despite the color, the water at no time will be unsafe to drink, according to the department. Water Agency To Meet Thursday

BEMUS POINT – Ellery Senior Citizens met March 14 at St. Timothy Lutheran church with 17 members and four guests present. The flag salute was led by Kay Crossley, and Gene Norris led devotions. Mary Ann Carlo’s birthday was recognized. Jane Nickerson and Kelly Lanphier, wellness ambassadors from Rite Aid, spoke about benefits of their company’s wellness card, savings for seniors and ways to help folks lead healthier lives. President Marty Hunt thanked the committee, John and Betty Lou Cheney, Rod Walker and Jan Anderson and Betty Lou dismissed the group with prayer. For Friday’s meeting, the committee will be Miriam Price and Kay Crossley and Dave Patchen, forest ranger, will share a slide program with the group. All members will bring a dish to pass for lunch. The Southwestern Central School Board of Education will hold its regular meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Board of Education room at the middle school. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct school business. The public is invited to attend.

Empire State Holding Session

Fredonia To Host College Fair

FREDONIA – SUNY Fredonia and the New York State Association for College Admissions Counseling will host a NYSACAC Regional College Fair on Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Steele Hall Fieldhouse. The event is free and high school students are encouraged to attend. College students, community members, faculty and staff are also welcome. Representatives of over 60 colleges will be attending and there will also be a financial aid presentation during the event. The event is planned to serve as a helpful source to start planning for college. Charlotte Board To Hold Meeting

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Charlotte Town Board will hold a regular meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the David Vern Luce Community Building, 8 Lester St., Sinclairville. All those interested are welcome to attend.

Support Group To Meet Wednesday

The Breast Cancer Support group will meet in Friendly’s on Wednesday. Dinner is at 6 p.m., followed by a meeting at 7 p.m. Adam Puleo and Lisa Schmidfrerick Miller will give a presentation on sugary beverages. Guests are welcome to attend.

Lenten Midweek Services To End

First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown will present the last in a series of Lenten midweek services on Wednesday. Cindy Lind Hanson will speak on the subject of “Faith Journeys” at noon in the church’s Bellinger Chapel. The church is located at 509 Prendergast Ave., and lunch will be served after worship in Fellowship Hall.

FREWSBURG – The Frewsburg Board of Education will meet Thursday at 6:45 p.m., in the middle/high school library. A budget workshop will be held in the superintendent’s office from 5:15-6:15 p.m., and a public hearing on the veterans’ exemption from 6:15-6:45 p.m. in the middle/high library.

To Hike Sunday

WARREN, Pa. – On Sunday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will hike a 5-mile loop on the Morrison Run Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. Bids For Mowing Now Accepted

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Evergreen Cemetery Association and the Sinclairville board of trustees are seeking bids for provision of lawn mowing for the 2014 season. Interested parties may obtain a bid proposal application by contacting Betty Ridout, association secretary, at 962-2309 or at various sites where announcements are posted. Deadline for bid proposals is April 21.

Troop To Host Meal Today

Boy Scout Troop 162 will be hosting a spaghetti lunch fundraiser, provided by “A Taste of Italy” at Kidder Memorial Church on Cole Avenue in Jamestown today from noon-3 p.m. Cost at the door for everyone ages 5 and up will be $5 each, and takeouts will be available. All proceeds will go directly toward camp fees.

Kiwanis To Hold Annual Dinner

Lecture To Appear On Channel 5

MAYVILLE – David Brooks’ Chautauqua lecture “Moral Geniuses” will be shown on Access Channel 5. The program will air at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning today with the last airing on Friday. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas.

Horsemanship Clinic To Begin

For five weeks, every Saturday beginning this weekend, Centaur Stride Inc. therapeutic horseback riding will host free horsemanship clinics. To Hold Sale

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is having a half-price sale on clothing, shoes and purses. The shop still has a wide selection of clothing for men, women and children. It is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Off-street parking is available in church parking lot off of East Fifth Street. Proceeds from the shop, which is operated by an all-volunteer staff including many from RSVP, are used for outreach in the community.

Revolution Group To Meet Saturday

GREENHURST – The Sons of the American Revolution will meet Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Chatterbox Restaurant, Fluvanna Avenue Extension, Greenhurst. The focus will be on the murder and research on Jane McCrea and her connection to the British at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. A brief talk will also be given on Francis Hopkinson, musician, attorney and author of the poem ”The Battle of the Kegs.” The group recently viewed a DVD presentation at a recent meeting on Peter Francisco who became known as the Hercules of the American Revolution. Pancake Benefit Set For Saturday

Bethel Baptist Christian Academy will be hosting an Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser on Saturday from 8-10 a.m. at Applebee’s, 340 Fairmount Ave., Lakewood. Tickets are $6 for the all-you-can-eat breakfast. BBCA will receive 75 percent of the proceeds.

Spanos To Appear On Show

MAYVILLE – Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Dr. MaryAnn Spanos as the guest on the television program this Saturday. Spanos is director for the Chautauqua County office for the aging. City Parking Switch Goes Into Effect

With monthly alternate parking in Jamestown effective today, vehicles need to be parked on the even-numbered side of the street. According to the Jamestown Police Department, vehicles should be parked only on the odd-numbered side of the street during odd-numbered months and only on the even-numbered side of the street during even-numbered months. Vehicles should be moved at 10 a.m. on the first day of each month. No grace period is given.

Outdoor Club To Meet Thursday

WARREN, Pa. – On Thursday the Allegheny Outdoor Club will hold its quarterly planning meet at 6:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church at 109 W. Third Ave. in Warren, Pa. Myers Library Sets Activities

FREWSBURG – For the Big Read of the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Myers Memorial Library has three activities planned in April. The first is today’s discussion of her works at 6:30 p.m. at the library. There will be refreshments served. A two-part workshop will be held on pressing and drying flowers. The first workshop will be Wednesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m., also in the community room. At this workshop participants will be learning and doing some of the methods used for drying and pressing. Then on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30, participants will be using their dried and/or pressed flowers for a small project. Participants are requested to bring an old telephone book and small covered box to the first workshop. Feel free to bring some flowers; the fresher the better. The library is located at the corner of Falconer Street and Ivory Street in Frewsburg. The Ivory Street entrance is handicap accessible. For more information, call the library at 569-5515.

Historical Society To Hold Meeting

RANDOLPH – The Randolph Historical Society will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building. The speaker for the evening will be Dan Martonis. His program will be on Geographic Information System and will pertain to mapping projects that he has completed throughout Cattaraugus County. Some projects that will be included in this program will be: the Little (New) Ireland within Allegany State Park, Amish Trails, cataloging and georeferencing cemeteries, examples using historical data to help in today’s mapping and others. The public is invited to attend.

Coldspring Board To Meet Thursday

STEAMBURG – The Coldspring Town Board met March 13 for their regular meeting. The next meeting will be Thursday. A motion was made for the highway department to purchase a wire feed welder. Assessor Roxanne Aucoin reported to the town board about work completed for the year 2013. New hours for the assessors are Thursday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. The town clerk’s books were reviewed by the town board. She presented to them her checkbook, cash receipts book, cash receipts ledger, monthly reports with annual report and a spiral cash receipts ledger. The books were signed and dated. Justice Jerrold Roosa and Dog Control Officer Kirk Hayes will give their annual reports at Thursday’s meeting.

‘Noah’ Talk To Be Held Saturday

“Straightening Out what Hollywood Misrepresented about Noah” will be presented at the Jamestown Prendergast Library on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Led by Pastor Mel McGinnis of the Kiantone Congregational Church, the presentation will include a side-by-side analysis of what the Bible says vs. what Hollywood made. Also featured at the presentation will be a short film produced by Ray Comfort called “Noah – And the Last Days.” The same presentation will also be held at the Kiantone Congregational Church on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
