Legion To Host Several Events

LAKEWOOD – Lakewood American Legion Post 1286 will be hosting Jules R Us Karaoke on Friday from 7-10 p.m. Dinners will be served from 5-9 p.m. Prime rib is the dinner special. Channel 5 To Show Gas Forum

Town of Chautauqua board members considered enacting a one-year moratorium on high-volume horizontal fracking, at a public hearing Feb. 10. Though the town board voted 3-1 to reject the moratorium, the two-hour public discussion revealed the nature of the divide between those who support the new industrial scale high-volume horizontal multi pad fracking and those opposing HVHF in Chautauqua County. The 96-minute video, filmed and edited by the Mayville-based film group, Snowshoefilms, documents the full statements of each of the 45 speakers. As several local residents noted, more than 160 New York towns and villages have enacted moratoria or bans of high volume horizontal fracking, to allow them local control in the event New York state lifts the moratorium on high-volume horizontal fracking. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 12:20 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on March 7.

Rod & Gun To Meet Thursday

The Lakewood Rod and Gun Auxiliary board will meet on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Auxiliary members will meet on Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m. Greeters will be Marcia Johnson and Carrie LaMancuso. Helpers will be Jan Pintagro and Jan DeVoe. Lyn Spencer and Mary Alonge will provide refreshments. Games of bingo will be played. The auxiliary awards two $1,500 scholarships each year. Marco Polo Group To Meet

Marco Polo Auxiliary members will meet on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Mary Racitano, president, and Rita Ellis hosted a meeting on Dec. 4. Reports were given by Frances Lunetta, secretary and Dorothy Galati, treasurer. A Christmas lunch was held on Dec. 7 in McCarty’s restaurant. Rita Ellis was chairwoman of the event. Entertainment was provided by James Purpura and Racitano. A vote was taken to hold future meetings at 6:30 p.m. and to serve only dessert and coffee.

Ash Wednesday Service Planned

WESTFIELD- The First Presbyterian Church, Westfield, will hold a Celtic Ash Wednesday Communion Service on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The service will feature readings from the ancient book of Celtic prayer, the Carmina Gadelica, plus a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in Gaelic. Kiwanis Club To Host Turkey Dinner

WESTFIELD – The Kiwanis Club of Westfield-Ripley will host a turkey dinner from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, 15 Union St., Westfield. Prices are $8 for those ages 12 and up, $5 for those ages 4 to 12 and free for children under 12. City AARP To Meet March 11

The Jamestown AARP will meet on Tuesday, March 11, in the parlors of First Lutheran Church, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Jennifer Schlick, of the Audubon Society, will present a program on its goals and activities. John Kachermeyer, a tax preparation volunteer from the AARP Foundation, will present information of interest to seniors preparing 2013 tax returns. Concert Series To Continue

TEA Party Group To Meet Tuesday

Zook To Appear On Senior Report

MAYVILLE – Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Galen Zook as the guest Saturday’s program. Zook is an oxygen therapist. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Channel 5 To Show Lectures

In cooperation with the Chautauqua Institution, Access Channel 5 will begin televising some of the Chautauqua lectures. Dalia Mogahed spoke during Week Two of the 2013 season. The theme that week was “The Next Greatest Generation.” The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Feb. 28. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas.

Yearbooks Now Being Collected

BEMUS POINT – The Bemus Point Historical Society has begun assembling a collection of Bemus Point Central School yearbooks. To date, Bob Terreberry and Donald Traynor have successfully obtained yearbooks as far back as 1931. The museum is still seeking the following annuals: 1934-39, 1941, 1943, 1945, 1951, 1999 and 2000-13. Of all the museum’s holdings, the yearbooks are the most frequently requested items by visitors seeking information on family or friends. Beef On Weck Dinner Sunday

RANDOLPH – The Women’s Association of the United Presbyterian Church of Randolph will hold a beef on weck dinner after morning worship on Sunday, serving from noon to 1:30 p.m. This annual event raises funds for both world-wide and local missions including the Randolph Community Cupboard, Genesis House and the Christmas baskets that are delivered to shut-ins in the community. Mary Myers and Sue Johnson are co-chair persons who said tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children age 12 and under. The menu includes beef on weck (Kaiser or whole wheat rolls), potato or macaroni salad, fruited jello, chips and homemade desserts made by the women of the church. The association includes all women of the church (both members and non-members) and meets the third Wednesday at the church at 11 a.m.

Motown Tribute Concert Friday

YWCA To Hold Event Tuesday

Dinner, music, purses and prizes are all part of a new event at the Celoron Legion on Tuesday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner is served at 6 p.m. Drawings will be held for assorted types of new and gently used bags filled with an assortment of prizes. There will also be some bags with mystery prizes. Tickets are on sale now for $25 which includes dinner and 10 drawing tickets. Tickets can be purchased in person at the YWCA, 401 N. Myers Library To Show ‘All Is Lost’

FREWSBURG – Myers Memorial Library will be showing “All is Lost” with Robert Redford as its free monthly movie on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the library’s community room. Redford is the only actor in this movie about one man’s battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. There is almost no dialogue in this movie. Firm Adds Two To City Office

The principals of Schaffner, Knight, Minnaugh & Company, P.C. recently announced the addition of two new professionals to its Jamestown office: Karen Schuler, CPA, and Staci Whittenhall.

Schuler, CPA, joined the firm as a tax manager. With more than 25 years of experience, she works with clients in the matters of corporate tax, partnership and individual tax as well as small business consulting. Schuler graduated magna cum laude from St. Bonaventure University where she earned a bachelor’s in business administration in 1988. She also acquired her CPA designation in 1991. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

With more than six years of experience, Whittenhall joined the firm as an administrative assistant. Doctor Joins Local Office

Dr. Hussein Ali-Ahmad, board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology will be joining Jamestown Medical Oncology Hematology, a Roswell Park Cancer Institute Community Cancer Practice.

Absentee Ballots Now Available

SALAMANCA – The Salamanca City Central School District recently announced the availability of absentee ballots for the special district vote to be held on March 11. The requirements are as follows: The applicant must be over 18, a registered voter, and a qualified voter of the school district; The application must be unable to vote in person on the day of the vote for reasons such as: in the hospital, nursing home, etc., outside of area on business, vacation outside of area or in college; service; application forms may be obtained from the School District Clerk during business hours 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or call 945-2403 for one to be mailed; the application must be received by the clerk at least seven days before voting if ballot is to be mailed to the voter or day before vote if the ballot is to be delivered personally to voter; absentee voter’s ballot must be received by the School District Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on Voting Day. Dinner, music, purses and prizes are all part of a new event at the Celoron American Legion on Tuesday. Courses Set For Feb. 12, March 4

The Small Business Development Center will host a two-hour business basics course to help those who want to open a business find essential information and guidance, learn what resources are available to help plan a business and tips to evaluate the feasibility of an idea and explore financing options, marketing, record keeping and more.
