History Series Begins Wednesday

The Continuing Education Department of Jamestown Community College and the Fenton History Center Education Department are presenting a three-part series of topics about public history and specific information about our county’s history. Presenters are Jonathan Schmitz, Chautauqua Institution archivist and historian; Vince Martonis, town of Hanover historian; and Michelle Henry, county historian. The classes will start Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and continue each Wednesday through Sept. 18. The cost is $59. The class size is limited; register early. Cruise-In Set

For Labor Day

The Der Kobblers Automobile Association will be holding their annual Labor Day Cruise-In at Midway State Park Monday. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Dash plaques and goody bags will be given to the first 400 cars registered. Awards, as voted on by participants, will be presented at 3 p.m. There will also be a Chinese auction and door prizes. This will also be the last day the park will be open.

Society Members To Meet Tuesday

SINCLAIRVILLE – Valley Historical Society members will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the museum, corner of Main and Lester streets, Sinclairville. Discussion will be on finalizing plans for the 15th annual history fair in Sinclairville, from 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 14.

Blood Drive

Set For Tuesday

CASSADAGA – The Cassadaga Fire Department Auxiliary will conduct a Community Blood Drive at the Community Building/Fire Hall on Mill Street in Cassadaga on Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. All donors will be entered into a chance to win four Bills vs. Steelers tickets. The auxiliary will also award to one of the local donors a $25 gas card.

Youth Group

To Hold Event

The Branch youth group will hold its big fall kickoff from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at 591 Hunt Road, Jamestown, the cornerstone center, across from Southwestern Central School. All children, sixth to 12th grade, are welcome to attend. Snacks, music and games will be featured.

Bag Sale

Begins Tuesday

Community Helping Hands, at the Gateway Center, 31 Water St. off Foote Avenue, Jamestown, will hold a bag sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 6, and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 7. Antique Club To Meet Wednesday

Antique Women’s Club members will meet at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Lakewood Community Center. Officers will provide treats. Dues must be paid at this meeting. The cost is $10 per person. Nineteen women met recently for their annual picnic. Committee members were Irene Berg, Madelyn Wellington, Donna Ecklof and Nancy Shelters. New officers were elected. They are Yvonne Lee, president; Madelyn Wellington, vice president; Nancy J. Schuyler, secretary; and Joan Robinson, treasurer. JHS Soccer Scrimmage Set

The Jamestown High School girls soccer team will hold a “Friday Night Lights” Red vs. White scrimmage combining the JV and varsity squads at the Martin Road Complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The JHS Red Raiders Girls Soccer Boosters are sponsoring the event. A $1 donation is asked by all who attend with all money raised benefiting the JHS Girls Soccer Boosters to help support the team. The event will also include a 50/50 giveaway and a halftime goalie shootout where anyone can take a shot on goal versus one of the three JHS goalies. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Celoron Board To Meet Thursday

CELORON – The Board of Trustees for the village of Celoron will be holding a special meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Celoron Community Center, 47 Dunham Ave., Celoron, to discuss a recommendation from the village Planning Board, set a public hearing date on Local Law No. 3 and conduct miscellaneous village business.

Library To Hold Open House

ELLINGTON – The Farman Free Library Board will host an open house on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the library to welcome the new library director, Arissa Hitchcock. AARP Board To Meet Thursday

The Jamestown AARP board will meet Thursday, Sept. 5, in the parlors of First Lutheran Church, beginning at 10 a.m. The general meeting, at the same location, will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Pianist Lucy Miller will present an inspirational program of music and the spoken word. There will be a business meeting and a book exchange. Refreshments will follow. All area seniors, age 50 and over, are welcome.

Music Showcase Set For Sept. 7

The 10th annual Local Music Showcase is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. at 10 participating venues in downtown Jamestown. Once again, all proceeds will benefit Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Inc. A total of 43 different acts will be participating in this year’s LMS at 10 downtown venues. Participating venues include: Mojos, Shawbucks, Cibo, The Pub, Labyrinth Press Company, Forte, The Wine Cellar, The Reg Studio Theater, Jamestown Skate Products and Infinity Arts Cafe. Pre-sale event tickets can be purchased at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Center at 115 Third St. and exchanged for wristbands the evening of the event. Driving Course Being Offered

BROCTON – The Ahira Hall Memorial Library, 37 W. Main St., Brocton, will sponsor a defensive driving class from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. Auditions Begin Wednesday

BEMUS POINT – Auditions for the Christmas musical, “It’s a Wonderful Life!” will be held at Bemus Point United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Worship Center of the church. The musical follows the original screenplay closely and will provide fellowship, fun and challenge. Actors, stage designers, stagehands and costume coordinators are needed. JCC Auditions Begin Wednesday

Auditions will be held Wednesday and Thursday for Jamestown Community College’s production of “Anything Goes,” which will be performed in the fall. The auditions, which begin at 7 p.m. in Scharmann Theatre, are open to students and community members. People trying out should memorize a song to sing and bring the sheet music and should also wear comfortable clothing for learning a dance routine. The musical will be directed by Robert Schlick with technical direction by Steven Gustafson. TRC To Host Bake Sale Friday

A queen hires an intrepid detective to find out the name of the little man who wants to take her son! An action-packed re-telling of “Rumpelstiltskin” done in the fashion of the classic detective thrillers of the 1940s. This is a 45-minute presentation recommended for kindergarten and up.

A dish to pass lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair, table service and items for an auction. The annual Ross Grange picnic will be Monday. To enjoy a ride on the Bemus Point/Stow Ferry members and friends should meet at the pavilion on the Stow side of the lake. Following a presentation by John Cheney, a volunteer of the Chautauqua Lake Historic Vessels group, at 3 p.m., and ride on the ferry, they will have a picnic supper. Historic Tour

Set For Saturday

SINCLAIRVILLE – A self-guided tour of historic Sinclairville, starting at the Sinclairville Free Library, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. There will also be refreshments and door prizes. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children under 14 and free for those under 5. Purchase of a ticket will include a historical brochure and entry for the door prizes. All proceeds will benefit the library. A PowerPoint presentation will be available for those who are unable to walk or in the event of rain. Tickets are also now available at $2 each or three for $5 for an opportunity to win a Nexus 7 tablet, with the drawing to be held during the Sinclairville History Fair on Sept. 14.

WESTFIELD – The Blue Star Mothers will hold a chicken and rib barbecue starting at noon Saturday at the Crossroads Craft and Farm Market, 6017 Westfield-Sherman Road, Westfield. Football Can Drive Set For Saturday

The Bemus Point Midget Football League will hold their annual can drive Saturday. The collection area will be at the Bemus Point bus garage. Redeemable cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles may be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Players will also be driven around in vehicles throughout the Bemus school district and will be identifiable by wearing their team jersey. To Host Spanos

“Senior Report with Reed Powers” will have MaryAnn Spanos as the guest Saturday. Spanos is director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television that has been recently autoscanned.

Knife Thrower To Make Appearance

The First Baptist Church of Frewsburg will present Johnny Bailey Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. Bailey is a three-time world champion knife thrower as well as in the Guinness World Book of Records for bullwhipping.
