TOPS Members Weigh In

TOPS NY 721 Jamestown met recently. Twenty-one members weighed in and a 15-pound loss was recorded. Best losers were Carol Kirkpatrick, TOPS; and Diane Anderson, KOPS. Dinner Set

Library Accepting Items For Sale

ASHVILLE – The Ashville Free Library is now accepting new and used books, in good condition, DVDs, and audio books for their annual book sale to be held Friday and Saturday. They are not accepting encyclopedias, college textbooks, magazines and Reader’s Digest-condensed novels. All other material can be brought to library during regular business hours. Comedy Fest Seeks Vendors

The Lucy Desi Center for Comedy is seeking vendors of all kinds for Friday and Saturday, from noon-6:30 p.m. at Jamestown’s “Comedy Central” party at the Jamestown Gateway Train Station. Festivities will include a silent and live auction of estate memorabilia and high-end designer items at 1 p.m., grape stomping, chocolate-wrapping, corn hole, interactive Pandora Comedy exhibits, never-before-seen archive items, comedy happy hours, music, beer, wine and more. Fish Dinner

Set For Friday

BEMUS POINT – The Thule Lodge, located at 4123 Pancake Hill Road, will hold a fish dinner Friday from 5-7 p.m. In addition, a second choice meal will be a pork roast and rotmos dinner. The dinner is open to everyone. Thule Lodge, now in its 106th year, serves to preserve the Swedish heritage through events and activities. New members are always welcome.

According to the county Health Department’s Beach Monitoring Program website – co.chautauqua. ny.us/departments/health/Pages/beachmonitoring.aspx – Bemus Point Beach’s water is satisfactory. On Wednesday, the website had indicated the water was unsatisfactory because of blue-green algae.

Golf Tourney

Set For July 28

RUSSELL, Pa. – The 2013 McCullough Golf Tournament will be held July 28 at Blueberry Hill Golf Club. The playing format is a four-person scramble and will feature traditional competitions and prizes along with lunch and beverages on the course. There will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. followed by an awards dinner at 2:30 p.m. at the American Legion, Samuel Derby Post No. 556 in Frewsburg. Extra dinner tickets cost $15. The cost for the tournament is $260 per team ($65 per golfer), which includes golf, cart, lunch on the course, dinner, and awards at the Legion. Common Ground To Perform

Bible School Begins Monday

Ross Grange Plans Meetings

Ross Grange met on July 8 with plans for their booth at the Chautauqua County Fair. The title will be “Grandma’s Home Remedies.” The fair will be Monday-July 28 in Dunkirk. Members are needed to check on the booth each day the fair is open. A thank you was received for the donation to the Falconer after prom and senior vigil. Lecturer Betty Wakefield gave a reading: “Things a mother would never say.” Other dates recognized were the County Grange Picnic on Aug. 11 at the Carris Farm in Ripley. Ross picnic will be Aug. 12 in Stow with a ride on the Bemus Point/Stow Ferry with John Cheney giving a history of the ferry. Aug. 26 will be an officer’s planning meeting.

Traffic Detour In City Begins Today

Drivers in Jamestown are requested to avoid the intersection of South Main and Broadhead today and Wednesday. BPU water crews will replace a water main on Broadhead Avenue between Prather and Kidder. As a result of the work, a large opening will be in the road at the intersection of South Main and Broadhead and traffic will be rerouted.

Teen Reading Focus Is Zombies

FREWSBURG – The Myers Memorial Library has kicked off its Teen Summer Reading program, ”Beneath the Surface,” featuring Zombies. The program is at 6 p.m. each Thursday, and all young people, ages 12-18, are invited to join as the program takes a journey into the world of zombies. Activities include a zombie autopsy, zombie games, a zombie prom at the end of the program and zombie refreshments.

Concert Series Set For Thursday

Pianist To

Perform Today

CHAUTAUQUA – Pianist Jon Nakamatsu will appear in recital today at 4 p.m. at the Chautauqua Institution’s Lenna Hall, 55 Hurst Ave., Chautauqua, as part of the Chautauqua Music Festival. The concert is free and open to the public, and features works by Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven. Nakamatsu, winner of the 1997 Van Cliburn Gold Medal, has performed to universal critical acclaim in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and in such cities as Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Paris, London, Berlin and Milan.

Library To Show Two Movies

Myers Memorial Library will be showing two movies this week. On Wednesday, the library’s normal free monthly movie, the library will be showing the musical “Les Miserables” at 3 and 6 p.m. Rated PG-13 for suggestive and sexual material, violence, and thematic elements, it is 2 hours, 38 minutes long, so attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a chair cushion. The extra movie, “James and the Giant Peach,” will be shown Thursday at 3 p.m. Rated PG for some frightening images, the film is 80 minutes long. This movie was chosen to go with the children’s summer reading programs theme of “Dig Into Reading.” All movies are sponsored by Frewsburg Pharmacy. The library’s summer hours are in effect: Monday and Wednesday 1-8 p.m.; Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday 2-5 p.m. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday. Butterfly Bash Set For Sunday

There will be a “Butterfly Bash” fundraiser for Epidermolysis Bullosa on Sunday from noon-3 p.m. at the Jamestown Elk’s Lodge on Fourth Street EB is a rare, sometimes fatal, genetic condition that affects one out of every 50,000 births. Patients with EB have skin so fragile that any rubbing, friction, or slight trauma can cause severe blistering and sores inside and outside of their bodies. Tickets for the “Butterfly Bash” are being sold for $10 presale or at the door. This includes lunch, entertainment and chance to win door prizes. All proceeds from this event will be donated to DebRA of America (debra.org) and its programs/services including its search for treatment and research to lead to a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Reading Program Set For Friday

Bandshell Series Continues In City

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus, located at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. The academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Outdoor Club To Ride Thursday

Cancer Support Group To Meet

The Wednesday meeting of the Breast Cancer Support Group of Jamestown will be at Friendly’s Restaurant in Brooklyn Square. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. with the meeting at 7 p.m. Speakers will be Shelly Leathers and Jennifer Abbott, who will partake in the Susan G. Komen walk Aug. 2-4 in Cleveland. Benefits Fair Planned In City

An employment and benefits fair for veterans and their spouses will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Jamestown National Guard Armory, 34 Porter Ave., Jamestown. Water Main Work Begins Today

Lakeview Avenue between Falconer and Sixth streets will be without water beginning at 9 a.m. today so a new water main can be tied in and activated by Board of Public Utilities crews. Water is expected to be restored by noon Wednesday. Water in the vicinity will be discolored following the installation of the new water main.

Summer Schedule Begins Sunday

KENNEDY – Beginning Sunday, Kennedy First United Methodist Church will be following its summer schedule. Worship service will be from 10-11 a.m. After the opening portion of the service, students will be dismissed to go to Sunday school classes. George Miller will be the guest speaker Sunday. He is a representative of Hope and Help International, a faith-based, evangelical ministry, committed to serving impoverished people in South Asia and India. He has ministered in the Ukraine, Albania, Greece, Cuba and Africa and throughout Western New York and the Eastern Coast of the United States. Music And Praise Begins July 14

The Salvation Army wil host Music and Praise by the River at 6 p.m. Sundays in July and August. Decade Reunion Set For July 13

All classmates from Southwestern Central School classes from 1960-70 are invited to attend the decade reunion Saturday, July 13. The party will be held at the Celoron Legion, 26 Jackson Ave., West Ellicott. Cocktails and appetizers will commence at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner starting at 7. AARP Chapter 334 will meet in the memorial park at Tanglewood Manor at noon July 9. Second Session Begins At JCC

Jamestown Community College’s second summer session, July 8-Aug. 15, will offer day and evening courses as well as online learning opportunities at JCC’s Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses and North County and Warren centers. Walking Tour Continues Today

Mayor Sam Teresi will hold the next in his series of Neighborhood Walking Tours today at 6:30 p.m. This tour will cover Dearing Avenue from Frink Avenue to Falconer Street. The door-to-door visit will provide residents with an opportunity to express comments or concerns in a one-on-one environment with the mayor.

Thrift Store To Repoen July 10

St. James Thrift Store, 141 Institute St., Jamestown, will be closed this week for the holiday. The store will reopen Wednesday, July 10. Hours are Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. RSVP volunteers will be on hand to help customers. Price remains $2 per bag. Proceeds are used to help those in need.
