Veterans’ Van Unavailable

The Chautauqua County Veterans Service Agency has announced that the Chautauqua County Veterans Van to the Buffalo Veterans Affairs Medical Center will not be available for service on Friday, July 5 due to the Independence Day holiday. The shuttle service offered to area veterans will resume its normal operations on Monday, July 8. The Veterans Service Agency apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause for riders.

Historical Society Open Saturday

FREWSBURG – The Carroll Historical Society will be open from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. Harold Bennett, a member of the Robert H. Jackson family, will be present to answer questions regarding the society’s Jackson displays. Other family members with exhibits may also be present. The Carroll Historical Society is located at 5 Main St., Frewsburg, in the building behind the Carroll Town Hall. There is no admission charge. Exhibits will continue through the summer. On Sunday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will hike a section of the Tanbark Trail from Sandstone Springs to Route 62. FREWSBURG – The Myers Memorial Library in Frewsburg will begin its summer hours July 1. The summer hours are 1-8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2-5 p.m. Friday. The library is closed Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Summer hours are in effect through Labor Day.

Historical Society Plans Picnic

CELORON – The Chautauqua County Historical Society’s annual picnic will take place at Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Celoron on Tuesday, from 6-8 p.m. In addition to spending a summer evening with others interested in local history, attendees will also hear from Authors Kathleen Crocker and Jane Currie, who released their fifth book together earlier this year entitled “Legendary Locals: The Chautauqua Lake Region.” The two will take time to discuss the work it took to put the book together as well as sign copies for those in attendance. New Museum Exhibit To Open

MACHIAS – A new exhibit opened in the Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Center, in the Stone House, 9824 Route 16, Machias. “War is Cruelty; A Sesquicentennial of the civil War in its Third Year” will run through October. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. This exhibit, intended to compliment a summer long series of Civil War-related programming, is made possible in large part due to generous loans from private collectors in Cattaraugus County. Church Plans Dedication

Christ Lutheran Church, L.C.M.C., will dedicate its new sanctuary at 3012 Route 430 at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The dedication service will be followed by a celebration/fellowship meal open to the community. After 13 months of rebuilding the old Chautauqua Public Inn at the corner of Dutch Hollow Road and Route 430, the congregation is anxious to share their joy over their first permanent home with the whole Chautauqua Lake community. Lee A. Magneson, pastor, will officiate and preach at the service and was quoted as saying, ”We have been so blessed by the enormous number of volunteers from our community and so thankful for their generous support and time given, that we would especially like to thank them in person for their partnership. Sunday also initiates the summer schedule. The Praise Service is at 8:30 a.m., coffee fellowship is at 9:30 a.m. and the traditional service follows at 10:30 a.m.

Cemetery Tour Set For Tuesday

“The Women of Lake View,” a tour looking at some of the women buried at Lake View Cemetery will start at the cemetery offices at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Buffalo Street at 6 p.m. Tuesday. This will be a walking tour about 60 to 90 minutes in duration. Many of the stops are near paved roadways; however there will be some “off-road” excursions. Timothy Class Set For Sunday

New Covenant Assembly Church, 7 Arlington Ave., Jamestown, will hold a Timothy Class beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. The class will run in three five-week sessions and each class will last approximately one hour. Ellicott To Host Rabies Clinic

FALCONER – The annual free rabies vaccination clinic will be held at the town of Ellicott highway garage, 235 E. Mosher St., Falconer, from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday. Celoron Concert Series Begins

CELORON – The Celoron summer concert series starts today. Concerts will start at 6:30 p.m. and end around 8:30 p.m. The concerts will be held in the Desi Arnaz Bandshell at Lucille Ball Memorial Park. Class On Strawberry

Preservation Set

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County will be holding a class on preserving strawberries on June 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center located at 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown. The hands-on class will walk participants through cooked strawberry jam recipes such as full sugar, reduced sugar, and artificial sweetener, and freezer jam. Participants will also learn about freezing strawberries and other fresh berries. The class is taught by volunteers recently trained at a CCE Master Food Preservers course. Registration is required in order to accurately plan for supplies and materials. Class size is limited to the first 25 registrations. The Jamestown YMCA will offer youth karate for students ages 5 to 15 years and adult karate from Tuesday through Aug. 8. The classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for youth and 5:30-7 p.m. for adults. Christina Kebort, a seventh-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, will teach students self-esteem, respect, confidence, discipline and self-defense. Annual Gala Set For Saturday

WESTFIELD – The Chautauqua County Historical Society’s annual fundraiser and gala is Saturday. “A Joyful Sound” will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the McClurg Museum in Westfield’s Moore Park. The fundraiser will feature hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting, along with Irish-American songs by the musical duo of Doc and Bill. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the museum and its exhibits. The cost to attend the Gala is $50 per person. Myers Library Book Sale Set

FREWSBURG – Myers Memorial Library will be holding its annual Book Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with the townwide yard sales. The library also sells baked goods and hot dogs along with having a yard sale. The book sale includes adult and children’s books, large-print, audio books, music and puzzles. Church Plans Chicken Dinner

SHERMAN – The Sherman Community Church, 109 Church St., Sherman, will hold an old-fashioned chicken barbecue at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The barbecue will take place rain or shine and go on until dinners are sold out. Meals, which include macaroni salad, baked beans, rolls and homemade pies, cost $8 for adults and $6 for children. Take-out orders will be available. Proceeds will help pay to repair the church’s steeple.

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop 409 Pine St., Jamestown, has a large selection of ladies’ summer clothing to size 3X. NY Cavalry To Perform

WESTFIELD – The 9th NY Cavalry reenactment group will be staging a Civil War encampment in Westfield’s Moore Park this weekend. The 9th Cavalry will set up camp on Friday evening with various activities scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be a special appearance by confederates from the 64th Virginia, who will participate in a battle reenactment Saturday afternoon. New this year for the kids, a doll-making workshop is also slated for Saturday, beginning at noon. A reading of various letters from the Civil War will be held in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. There is no cost to attend any of the 9th Cavalry events. Book Signing To Be Held Saturday

Camera Class Set For Saturday

Colley Benefit To Be Held Saturday

A benefit will be held for Rick and Susan Colley on Saturday. The benefit will feature food, music, prizes and more. There will be a spaghetti dinner with salad and dessert. A Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing will also be featured. The Skeleton Keys will provide the entertainment. The benefit is being held to help the Colleys with expenses related to Rick’s recent health issues. He has been in many hospitals and rehab centers as a result of losing his left leg and now needs handicap-accessible housing. Antique Club To Meet Wednesday

The Women’s Antique Club will meet for a picnic on Wednesday in the Lakewood Rec. Center. Members should take a tureen and spook, their table service and beverage if they do not want coffee. Dessert will be furnished by committee members Joyce Bracey, Shirley Brace, Irene Berg and Betty Kohlbocher. The Lakewood Antique Study Club recently visited the North East, Pa. Antique Mall and the Clantique Store in Girard; the Battles Museum, a Victorian home built in 1862, built by the Battles Family; and the Yellow Farm, the original homestead from the 1800s.
