JHS Class Of ’48 To Meet June 18

The Jamestown High School class of 1948 Reunion Committee will meet June 18 at the First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall at 9:30. The Southwestern Schools Education Foundation had originally planned the Trojan Open Golf Scramble for June 8 at Maplehurst Country Club as a fundraiser, however, due to low participation, it has been forced to cancel this event. Library To Hold Program Monday

FREWSBURG – On Monday at 6:30 p.m. a special program about local emergency services will be presented at Myers Memorial Library. Town of Carroll Police Chief Timothy Wright, a Frewsburg Fire Department representative, and, if available, a county dispatcher will be present to talk about the services they provide and in particular the Smart911 program. Annual Rural Cemetery Lunch

KIANTONE – The Chautauqua County Federation of Rural Cemeteries will meet starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the Kiantone Congregational Church. The meeting is hosted by the Maple Grove Cemetery. Registration is from 10-10:30 a.m. Business will be conducted between 10:30 a.m. and noon. At noon the luncheon will be served. Special Meeting Is Wednesday

MAYVILLE – As requested by motion of the Chautauqua County Legislature at the regular meeting held on May 22, Chairman Jay Gould has scheduled a special meeting of the legislature to be held on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers of the Gerace Office Building. The purpose of the meeting will be to consider any additional action as may be necessary regarding adopted Resolution 101-13, entitled “Supporting Passage of A.7431 & S.5088- An ACT to amend the tax law, in relation to allocation of revenue from the hotel and motel taxes in Chautauqua County; and to amend chapter 405 of the laws of 2007, amending the tax law relating to increasing hotel/motel taxes in Chautauqua County, in relation to extending the expiration of such provisions.” Such additional action concerning Resolution 101-13 may include, but not be limited to, action to renew, amend, or rescind the resolution.

Walking Tour

Set For Tonight

Mayor Sam Teresi will hold the next in his series of Neighborhood Walking Tours today at 6:30 p.m. This tour will cover the entire length of Harris Avenue. The door-to-door visit will provide residents with a unique opportunity to express comments or concerns in a one-on-one environment with the mayor. Cemetery Tours Begin In June

Lake View Cemetery, 907 Lakeview Ave., Jamestown, will offer monthly walking tours of the cemetery beginning in June. The one-hour tours will each have a different theme, highlighting many new persons and stories. The tours are free, but reservations are appreciated. Comfortable shoes and appropriate dress for the weather are recommended. Announcements will be published each month in The Post-Journal and on the cemetery website, www.lake-view-cemetery.com. Donations will be accepted.

To Host Banquet

The Women’s Club of Lakewood will hold its annual spring banquet today, at the Athenauem Hotel at Chautauqua Institution. Their chefs will create a “Farm to Table” experience that encompasses the bounty provided by our local region’s growing seasons for the approximately 100 members and guests of the club. Laurie Stanton, manager of group sales and senior programs at Chautauqua and a member of the club, will give a presentation while the guests dine and take a short video tour through some of the local farms that supplied the meal. At a recent meeting of the Sons of the Legion Samuel L. Derby Post 556, the following officers were elected for the upcoming year: Squadron Commander Daryl Dutchess, 1st Vice President Richard Moord, 2nd Vice Miaha Station, 3rd Vice James Robers, Historian Bruce Peterson, Sergeant of Arms Paul Yetskey, Chaplain Donald Schrader Sr. and Finance Officer Boyd Shaffer. Falconer To Host Parade Monday

FALCONER – The village of Falconer will honor its veterans at its Memorial Day parade Monday. Participants will assemble on Dow Street at 9:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and travel down West Main Street to North Work Street, continuing to Pine Hill Cemetery. The American Legion Henry Mosher Post 638 will have services at the cemetery followed by a prayer service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on South Dow Street at 11 a.m. The guest speaker will be Assemblyman Andrew Goodell. The legion will be hosting a buffet beginning at noon at the post at 132 W. Main St. and all are welcome to join.

Erlandson To Speak Monday

Tom Erlandson will be the guest speaker at the annual Fentonville Methodist Church Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Following the service, participants will march to the Fentonville Cemetery for a service at the grave of the Unknown Soldier, conducted the Frewsburg American Legion. All are welcome to attend.

FREWSBURG – The Frewsburg Memorial Day parade will be on Monday at 10 a.m. Those marching should line up at 9:30 a.m. at the Ethan Allen Building. Afterward Samual L. Derby Post 556 will supply hot dogs and beverages to all involved, please bring a dish to pass.

Gerry Memorial Day Parade Set

GERRY – The Gerry Memorial Day Parade will be held Sunday. Line up is at 1:30 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. Step off will be at 2 p.m. The parade will march to the cemetery on Route 60. Legion To Hold Observance

The Sinclairville American Legion David Vern Luce Post 778 will continue a tradition that began in 1924 when they held their first Memorial Day observance in Evergreen Cemetery. This 90th annual observance will be held on Monday and will begin with the traditional parade. This year it will start near the intersection of Jamestown Main streets with step off at 9 a.m. The parade lineup will be by Doug Goodwill and all wishing to participate are welcome. The parade will proceed to the Evergreen Cemetery near the Soldiers Monument for the Memorial Day Service. Major David Grabow will be the guest speaker. Major Grabow is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Falconer Group To Meet Tuesday

Senior Report To Host Jim Powers

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Jim Powers as the guest on the May 25 television program. Powers’ topic is “Cooking for One.” The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions or comments. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. To Ride Today

The Allegheny Outdoor Club will ride bikes in the Frewsburg and Onoville areas today. Participants will meet at the TOPS Market in Frewsburg at 5:30 p.m. From there, bikes will be transported to Holmstead Park Campground on Saw Mill Road, then riders will continue on to Onoville for ice cream then on to Perimeter Road before returning to Frewsburg via Ivory Road. Set For Today

Women’s Services of Chautauqua County Pregnancy Resources will hold a fundraising spaghetti dinner at St. James Church at 27 Allen St., today from 4:30-7 p.m. The organization is a nonprofit pregnancy resource center offering programs and services to the community at no charge for 27 years. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door. Dinner includes homemade spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage. Eat in and take out are available. Veterans Asked To March In Busti

BUSTI – All town of Busti residents who served in the armed forces are invited to take part in the Busti community’s annual Memorial Day parade on Monday. The event will form up at 8:30 a.m. at the former New Beginnings Restaurant on Sugar Grove Road, with the parade stepping off at 9 a.m. Veterans are welcome to come in regulation uniform or street clothes, with or without their ribbons, medals and awards. Those who want to walk can walk the parade route, but a flat bed float will be provided. The town’s most senior veterans will be chauffeured in one of the parade’s antique cars. After the memorial service the Busti gazebo, all are invited to breakfast at the Busti Fire Department.

Veterans Event Set For Tonight

FREWSBURG – There will be an honor and remembrance ceremony held at the Frewsburg Veterans Memorial Park on Parkway Drive in Frewsburg tonight at 7 p.m. for all of the town of Carroll residents who have served for the United States. The town is asking residents who have a loved one serving, or who want to remember a loved one’s service to our country, to bring a red or white geranium in honor of them. CELORON – The April meeting of the Chautauqua County American Legion was held recently at the Herman Kent Post 777 in Celoron. Eighth District Commander Al O’Donnell attended the meeting. He spoke about membership on the county, district and state level. Various committee reports were given. A $100 donation from the J. Carter Knapp Post 953 in Forestville was given to the Flag Education Program. A report on homeless veterans was given. California, Florida, Texas and New York lead the nation with the greatest number of homeless veterans. There was a report on efforts by the VA to reduce the backlog of veterans claims being underway. Membership citations were presented to a number of posts. Andrew Field from Troop 267, Fredonia, was announced as the Boy Scout of the Year for Chautauqua County. The next meeting of the County Legion will be on Friday at the Henry Mosher Post 638 Falconer.

Babysitting Clinic Begins Saturday

The Jamestown YMCA will hold its next babysitting clinic for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Jamestown YMCA. The clinic will instruct participants about the responsibilities involved in caring for younger children including child development, safety and emergency response. The clinic is taught by experienced instructors who have knowledge in child development, health and overall care of children. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Space is limited. AARP Group To Meet Tuesday

The Jamestown AARP will meet Tuesday in the parlor of First Lutheran Church at noon. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass. Bruce Supernault will present a program on the historic Martin House in Buffalo, where he serves on the board. This house was designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Legion To Host Derek Davis

LAKEWOOD – Lakewood legion will host Derek Davis and the Tasty Groove on Saturday night from 7-11 p.m. A steak fry will be from 5-9 p.m. It is also the spring camp out. On Sunday, there will be a breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon. Mothers eat free.

Zonta Club To Hold Fundraiser

The Zonta Club is taking part in a fundraiser for “Lily’s Hope” at Crossroads in Westfield on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s the fourth annual Soup-R Saturday put on by Kathy “Blanche” Milliman of Blanche’s Goodie Garden located at Cross Roads in Westfield. The fundraiser is a soup “taste-test” and sale, where all proceeds will go toward helping women in Chautauqua County receive free wigs, caps, turbans or scarves from “Lily’s Hope.” Open since November 2010, “Lily’s Hope” has helped close to 200 in need. Senior Report To Host John Hamels

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have John Hamels as the guest Saturday. Hamels will discuss the Masons. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change. Bike Day Event Set For Thursday

Jamestown Community College’s Student Occupational Therapy Assistant club and the Greater Chautauqua Area AMBUCS will hold its annual bike day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in JCC’s Student Union. During the event, individuals of all ages with disabilities are evaluated to determine what kind of adaptive bike would meet their needs. AMBUCS, a grassroots public charity, was established to create mobility and independence for people with disabilities. Falconer Business Assn. To Meet

FALCONER – The Falconer Business Association will meet on Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Falconer Burger King restaurant on East Main Street. Through fundraising efforts, two scholarships will be awarded to two Falconer Central School seniors showing an interest in business. Tickets for an outdoor patio furniture giveaway will be available with the drawing to be held at the Der Kobblers’ Car Show on May 25 in Falconer’s Davis Park. The annual Falconer Business Association’s Villagewide Garage Sale Days have been set for June 7-8. Village residents can sign up at Falconer Vacuum Shop to be included on the map/directory; cost is $5 and includes a yard sign.

Grocery Drive Begins Thursday

On Thursday the Falconer Rotary will be dropping off empty grocery bags to the residents of Falconer, Ellington and Kennedy. They will return to pick up donations after 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. To participate, just fill the bag with nonperishable food items, paper goods or personal care items and place them by the front door. To drop a donation off directly to the food pantry, there will be staff available at the Falconer, Kennedy and Ellington food pantries on the evening of May16 and the morning of Saturday, May18.

Spaghetti Dinner To Be Held Today

FALCONER – Noah’s Ark stay-and-play programs, a ministry of Falconer United Methodist Church, will be hosting a spaghetti dinner. The dinner will be held in the church fellowship hall today from 4:30-7 p.m. Meals will be $6 for adults and $4 for children under 10. Take-outs are available. Free Food Is Available Today

The Western NY Food Express Truck will be at the Ashville United Methodist Church today from noon until 1:30 and will reopen from 3:30-5 p.m. The truck brings mostly fresh produce plus a few basic products. Fenton To Host Brown Bag Lecture

Aaron Hall is the subject of Kathy Benware’s talk Wednesday at noon at the Fenton History Center. Hall, a 19th-century builder turned architect “played an important part in the development of the city from the struggling village of the Civil War period to the thriving industrial community of the present day,” states his obituary. A few of his structures are the Fenton Mansion, the Old City Hall, many hotels, the original Prendergast building at Main and Third, the Hoyt block on West Third Street and the Wellman buildings. He also designed residences and churches. The talk will cover the extensive list of buildings and his life story. The lecture is free, but donations are welcome. The series takes place the second Wednesday of each month April through October. The next topic on June 12 is about the Jamestown Trolley system by Bob Johnston. AARP will be offering a safe driving class Monday and Tuesday, May 13-14, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Salvation Army, 83 S. Main St., Jamestown. Students must attend both sessions. ASHVILLE – Today from 9-11 a.m., the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy will hold its fourth annual Invasive Species Pull. This year’s pull will target garlic mustard and other invasive species at the conservancy’s Loomis Goose Creek Wetland Preserve on Route 394 in Ashville, next to the Ashville Bay Marina. Pride Day Is Today In Falconer

FALCONER – Falconer residents are being encouraged to spruce up the community for the summer during the 18th annual Pride Day today. Residents who want to take part in the clean up should report at 9 a.m. to the Falconer Fire Hall on Davis Street where they will be split into groups and begin the cleanup effort. After the cleanup is completed at about 11 a.m., the workers will receive a complimentary lunch at the fire hall. The Fire Department Auxiliary and a number of organizations will sponsor the lunch.

Gerry GOP To Host Breakfast

GERRY – The Gerry Republican Committee will hold a pancake and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11:30 a.m. today at the Gerry Fire Hall. Rabies Clinic Today In Poland

POLAND – The town of Poland will host a free rabies clinic for residents today from 1-3 p.m. at the Poland Highway Department Garage on Grubb Hill Road. This is the first time in many years that a clinic has been held in the town. Brian King, town dog control officer, has arranged the clinic. Residents may bring their dogs and cats in carriers or on leashes. A copy of the pet’s last rabies certificate should be brought as well, so the animal can receive a three-year rabies shot. If no certificate is available, a one-year shot will be given. The veterinarian will be Dr. Mary Fales. Volunteers will be present to assist residents. Anyone with questions may call 338-7496.

Library To Host Bazaar Today

FINDLEY LAKE – The Alexander Findley Lake Library will host a spring craft bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Findley Lake Fire Hall. A variety of handmade crafts, baked goods, homemade lunch and pie, a Chinese auction, raffle and free door prize drawings will be featured. Admission is free.
