Church Readies For Holy Week

The Rev. Father Mark Duko, St. George Cathedral associate pastor, Boston, will be serving St. Elia Eastern Orthodox Church, 103 Palmer St., Jamestown, during Pascha (Easter) Holy Week, Wednesday through Saturday. He is also a property manager for the Illyrian Garden Apartments, Worcester, Mass. He and his wife, Coleen, live in Leicester, Mass., and have two daughters. Saint Elia Eastern Orthodox Church is under the jurisdiction of His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon, Bishop of Boston, New England and the Albanian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America.

Blood Drive Set For Wednesday

CASSADAGA – A Community Blood Drive will be held at the Cassadaga Community Building (fire hall) on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. The Cassadaga Fire Department Auxiliary will be giving one donor a $25 gas card.

Rummage Sale Begins Thursday

Christ First United Methodist Church, 663 Lakeview Ave., will hold a spring rummage sale from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; and a $1 bag sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Thrift Shop Has Many Items

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is featuring ladies high-end clothing and shoes as newly received items are added to the merchandise. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Donated items are received on those days as well as 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays. Proceeds from the shop, which is run by volunteers from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, RSVP and the community, are donated to local outreach programs.

Annual Chess Match Today

The Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship Tournament today, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Board Room of its 62 Allen St. facility. The tournament is open to boys and girls, ages 5 through 18, with two age divisions of 12 and under and 13 and up. Experienced players as well as novice players are welcome. Knowledge of the basic moves allowed for each piece is the only skill requirement. Pre-registration is not required, although participants must have, or purchase, a Jamestown Boys & Girls Club youth membership. Interested non-members may purchase a membership for $15, valid for one full year. Participant awards will be presented for each player completing four full games, with special awards for age group champions and runners-up. Spanos To Speak On Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have MaryAnn Spanos as the guest on today’s television program. Spanos is director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change. Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville.

Dinner Dance

Set For Today

Hospice Chautauqua County is hosting their second annual Dinner Dance today at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville. The Masquerade Ball will begin with cocktails at 5:30, with a sit down dinner of filet mignon and salmon at 7. Attendees can dance to music by Chautauqua Big Swing Band and Digital Extravaganza and participate in the auction. Giveaways will be announced throughout the evening. Tickets for the semi-formal Masquerade Ball benefiting Hospice Chautauqua County are $50 and can be purchased at 20 W. Lions Club To Host Dinner Today

FREWSBURG – The annual Frewsburg Lions Club Spaghetti Dinner will be held today from 5-7 p.m. at the Frewsburg fire hall No. 2. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 5-10 and free for children under 5. This fundraiser is to support the blind and helping hand fund that benefits those in need.

The Jamestown Moose Lodge 1681 announces its kitchen is now open. Bows Sale Runs Through May 20

SHERMAN – The Rural Center in Sherman is holding an Honor Your Troop bow sale now until May 20. Cemetery Group To Hold Cleanup

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Board of Trustees of the Sinclairville Evergreen Cemetery met on April 8 to review bids for seasonal lawn care. A successful bid was received and the contract awarded. Spring clean-up days are scheduled for Saturday and May 4. All winter decorations should be removed prior to those dates.

Day Care Meeting To Be Held Today

The new Christ First Church Rise and Shine Day Care Center located on the corner of Buffalo Street and Lakeview Avenue in Jamestown will hold an informational meeting today from 5-7 p.m. at the church. JHS Class Of ’78 Sets Reunion

The Jamestown High School Class of 1978 will hold its 35th class reunion July 6 at the newly renovated Jamestown Gateway Station. Events will include an ice breaker on July 5, a tour of Jamestown High School and the establishment of a memorial scholarship fund in honor of classmates who have died. It is the goal of the committee to use and highlight Jamestown businesses and reach out to every class member. Jamestown High School Class of 1983 will hold its 30-year class reunion Saturday, July 20, at the Renaissance Center in Jamestown at 6 p.m. The cost for dinner and dancing is $25 per person. Bridge League To Meet Thursday

On April 18, the team of Donna Simmons and Bill Tordella took first place honors in the Jamestown Area Bridge League weekly game. Jane Roos and Vicky Laury were second. The league meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the Busti-Lakewood Community Center, 9 W. Summit, Lakewood. The league is ACBL sanctioned and points are awarded, but ACBL membership is not required. Open House Planned Thursday

EAST RANDOLPH -An open house at the Randolph Area Nursery School, the former YMCA Randolph Nursery School program for 3-year-olds, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the East Randolph United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 122 Church St. The school will be held from 9-11 a.m. two days a week and follows the calendar of the Randolph Central School. Panama Board To Talk Budget

PANAMA – The Panama Central School Board of Education will hold two special board meetings. The board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday to discuss the 2013-14 budget and then at 7 a.m. Tuesday to approve the BOCES administrative budget and election of a BOCES board member. Both meetings will be in the boardroom and open to the public.

Swim Program Accepting Kids

The Winfred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls of Jamestown is currently registering participants for infant-toddler swim classes. The next eight-week session begins on Monday and will run Mondays through June 17. For the Infant Toddler Swim class the cost is $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. The program is designed for children under 5 and they must have an adult swim with them. FALCONER – The Falconer Rod and Gun Club, off of Buffalo Street Extension, will host its annual spring turkey shoot and pancake breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Sunday. A standing slug shoot will cost $3 and a standing lucky shoot will cost $3. There will also be several individual drawings. Ammunition will be furnished for birdshot and deer slugs only. The shoot will be held rain or shine and the public is welcome to attend.

BUSTI – The Hazeltine Public Library will welcome local author and artist George Clever on Monday at 6:30 p.m. for a book signing and his presentation, “Top 10 Things You Should Know About Your Writing and Self-Publishing.” Clever is the author of the poetry collection “Dancing with Grandfather,” its structure informed by the tradition of the American Indian star quilt; as well as the forthcoming collection Bear Lake Monster and Other Clever Stories. Sherman To Offer UPK Program

SHERMAN – Sherman Central School will be offering a Universal Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2013-14 school year. The program will provide age-appropriate, educational activities for 4-year-olds. All students need to reside in the Sherman School District and must turn 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2013, in order to qualify for the program. Proof of proper immunization and birth certificate are required. Applications have been mailed to families included on the school census. Twenty members and one guest attended a recent meeting. John and Betty Lou Cheney, Paul Samuelson and Marty Hunt were the committee. Gene Norris gave table grace and led devotions. Peter Carlo led the flag salute. John Crossley, Chautauqua County Amateur Radio Club president, spoke on the equipment used for disasters and how they can talk worldwide to other radio clubs and members. Celebrating birthdays were Paul Samuelson, Lois Norris, Marlene Walrod, Jean Telschow and Mary Ann Carlo. Ms. Cheney closed the meeting with prayer.

Waterline Work Today In City

Jamestown Board of Public Utilities’ water employees will replace water mains on Lakeview Avenue today from 535 Lakeview Ave. to Van Buren Street. Water will be turned off to customers in that area from 8:30 a.m. until around noon. When water is restored, the water will be discolored on Jamestown’s north side for 12-18 hours. Today’s work by the BPU is part of the overall rebuilding of the Lakeview Avenue project. The BPU this year will replace water mains from Price to Falconer streets on Lakeview Avenue as well.

Anniversary Mass Is Sunday

FALCONER – Our Lady of Loreto Roman Catholic Church in Falconer will culminate the nearly yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary with a mass at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, Bishop of the Buffalo Diocese, will be the celebrant. The Pastor of Our Lady of Loreto, the Rev. Joseph Janaczek, several local parish priests and previous pastors of OLL, will be concelebrants with Bishop Malone. Parishioners of OLL, including the various members of ministries of the local church: the Parish Choir and Music Ministry, Faith Formation students, OLL Youth Group, CREW young families group, Altar & Rosary Society, Holy Name Society and St. Vincent DePaul Society, will join in the liturgical celebration. Father Janaczek and the parishioners of Our Lady of Loreto extend a welcome to their brothers and sisters to participate with them in worship and celebration on Sunday.

JHS Winter Guard Wins Again

The Jamestown High School Express Winter Guard program took to the floor in competition against seven other guard groups this weekend in Rochester, and left the audience in awe as they performed their rendition of “Bound to You,” winning their eighth straight first place trophy this year with a final score of 93.840. They continue to hold on to the No. 1 position in the nation in their class. The final chapter of their run this year is to prepare and leave Wednesday for competition in Dayton, Ohio.

Dinner Theater Begins April 27

LAKEWOOD – The Lakewood American Legion will host a herring breakfast and “the grand slam” featuring three eggs, ham, sausage, toast, homefries and coffee and all you can eat homemade blueberry pancakes from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Swim Lessons Begin Tuesday

The Winfred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls of Jamestown will be starting a new eight-week session of swim lessons. The club uses the Red Cross system of progressive instruction for beginning to advanced swimmers with placement in classes that encourage and support each child’s efforts and abilities. The swim lesson registration fee is $25 per participant. A Boys & Girls Club membership is also required and available for $15 for one full year of membership. Cemetery Cleanup Set For April 15

FREWSBURG – Maple Grove Cemetery, Frewsburg, will begin its spring cleanup on April 15. Any wreaths or decorations not removed will be disposed of by cemetery officials.

Museum Trip Deadline Extended

The date has been extended to Thursday to sign up for a trip to the Warther Museum in Dover, Ohio. The trip is on April 30. Any senior citizen is eligible to attend. Sherman Pre-K Sign-Up Begins

SHERMAN – Sherman Central School will offer a universal pre-kindergarten program for the 2013-14 school year. The program will provide age-appropriate, educational activities for 4-year-olds. All students need to live in the Sherman School District and must turn 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2013, in order to qualify for the program. Proof of proper immunization and birth certificate are required. Applications have been mailed to families included on the school census. Those who have not received an application in the mail should call 761-6121 to request one.

Thrift Shop Is Ready For Spring

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is filled with spring colors and seasonal clothing styles in all departments. Spring hours start this week with the shop open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Donated items are received on those days as well as 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays. Proceeds from the shop, which is run by volunteers from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church as well as RSVP and the community, are donated to local outreach programs.

Warren Class Of 1966 To Meet

WARREN – The Warren Area High School Class of 1966 will hold a lunch at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, in the Warren County Career Center, located next to the high school. The career center will close its diner in order to accommodate the class. The cost of this sit-down, professionally served meal is $7 per person and will include soup, entree, desert and coffee, all in a restaurant setting. Marco Polo Club To Host Dinner
