Worms More Signs Of Spring
You know it’s spring when you see worms. Last week when I walked out to get my newspapers in the early morning hours the driveway was filled with little pink worms crawling across the blacktopped expanse.
I had no idea where they were going or why they were moving, but they were inching their way along with no regard for the animals(my pets) or the humans wandering along. I only hoped I did not crush any because they were that prolific.
The crocuses are still pushing the purple flowers for all to see in my lawn. I explained a while ago how I happened to have them everywhere.
A cousin who was visiting put in some weeding time while I was at school. Unfortunately she pulled many of my crocuses and threw them out in the yard. She did not recognize the little bulbs.
Each year as they appear I think lovingly of her. She really did something for me that is quite neat.
Now the daffodils are poking their green spears up as they struggle to not only grow, but blossom as well. I love the cheerful yellow color that they add around the yard.
If a house is abandoned the daffodils will still grow there for a long time bringing a spot of color and joy to the abandoned site.
Since I have allergies I do not bring the daffodils inside but admire them outdoors instead. The pollen triggers my allergies into a full blown attack if I bring them in. Incidentally, I always take some Benydral with me on Easter Sunday so I can take a pill.
It is getting time that I can enjoy that first cup of coffee on the porch. While I indulge I watch and listen to the birds. This morning a couple crows were dipping and swirling as I ate my breakfast. They are such clumsy birds you never quite know where they will land.
Can you tell that I like spring? I love everything about it except for the allergies.
It does my heart good to savor the sunshine that peeks out every now and then. Everyone feels better when the sun is shining.
Last weekend was our church’s annual pancake supper — another rite of spring. Thank you to all of you who showed up to eat pancakes and fellowship with us. One year I was able to feature the pancake supper in a national magazine. Even people who winter in Florida read about it.
Agriculture Awareness Day was in March. What a fitting day to celebrate with the farmers who are just beginning to plow, plant, and build fences. It makes me happy to see the farmers out working in the fields. Once things are planted I await the subsequent growth. I think of my father-in-law who farmed the acreage around here for many years. He drove the tractor about as long as he lived. My son and daughter never got a chance to drive the tractors because grandpa wanted to do it. No one would dare argue with grandpa.
As I think about spring I also think about the spring vegetables. My mother-in-law planted some asparagus by the old milk house — now the store. Each spring we enjoyed fresh asparagus. There also were fresh peas — the kind that come in the pod.
When we were young we used to take the peas out the pods for my aunt. She cooked her vegetables in milk so I did not enjoy them much. Of course I had eaten many peas as we removed them from the pods.
One year I thought that I was treating the grandchildren with fresh peas. I had them help me remove them from the pods. They did not really enjoy them. I suppose because they were something new.
The sound of birds is everywhere. As I walk outdoors I hear them. If I look carefully enough I am able to see them as well. I love to watch the birds. I can see them out of my kitchen window. It is a great place to watch them. If the feeders are full there will be birds to watch. I have seen many robins as well as a bluebird or two. Of course I see the pairs of cardinals. Now I will add here that I am not as good at identifying them by their song as my son is. He mentioned the birds he heard the other day and I was amazed.
We have had our first spring thunder storm. The other night the thunder rolled while the lightning lit up the sky. Thankfully my dog was not phased by the storm. When he was ready for bed he stood in the dining room until I got up, then he went right to his little coop. More thunderstorms are forecast for this week so I hope all is well here. I know they are having tornados in many areas.
We are not out of the woods yet as far as the snow. There were snowflakes in the air yesterday morning. I remember several April snowfalls; in fact the slipperiest day last year was an April snow. The good thing is that we know the snow will not last. I even remember it snowing on Mother’s Day and that is in May. My neighbor used to say that she figured it was safe to wash the hats and mittens on the Fourth of July!
