Butterflies

“How am I supposed to go through life without letting the butterflies in my blood fly as high as they could?” – Cold Lazarus, “Butterflies”

Just two weeks after we first entered Graphite Sound Studios in Warren, Pa., Cold Lazarus now has a fresh, professional sounding recording for all to hear.

It’s still rather surreal to think of how much we’ve accomplished as a band in under three months. We’ve added a member, written upwards of a dozen original songs, booked several shows over the coming months and created a professional promotional product with which to market ourselves. It’s kind of crazy to wrap my head around.

To use the word “whirlwind” to describe the wicked fast momentum things have taken for themselves might be fairly accurate. I certainly never could have foreseen how smoothly and easily things would come together for us; it’s just simply never happened for me that way before in another band environment. But, I can say that I’m loving it.

The greatest thing about it is that we are all good friends both in and outside of the band space. And when we do get together to play and write, we just seem to click on a transcendental level. One of the first signs that things probably aren’t going to work out in the long-term is if there is any underlying tension or you have to force things in a certain direction in order to make the creativity flow. That’s not the case here.

In addition to the harmonic balance we each bring to the music, each member of the group also contributes individually to the forward progress of the band.

I, for example, have been working on getting us gigs and promoting us to venues and festival organizers. Marco Scapellite, our drummer/”Beat Battery,” as he calls himself, has been great with the graphic design and online promotion of our music. Adam Gould is our guitarist and principal songwriter, and is also great with computer coding, programming and Web design — which will surely come in handy when the time comes for us to have a professional looking website. Drew Minton, who teaches music at Sherman Central School, has been crucial to the overall soundscape of our songs on keyboards, synthesizers and saxophone, as well as giving our music some exposure to a younger generation.

In the meantime, our four-track EP “All Alone” is currently available online for free or on a name-your-price basis at coldlazarus.bandcamp.com/album/all-alone-ep, as well as soundcloud.com/coldlazarus. We anticipate having a handful of physical CDs that we will make available at our upcoming shows.

So, yes, good things are happening and, I suspect, will continue to happen. We haven’t even played a show yet but have already managed to create a discernable buzz among the local music and arts community. I can’t wait to see what the next few months has in store for us!

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.
