Gerry Senior Citizens Gather For Luncheon And Health Program

GERRY — The Rodeo City Senior Citizens met recently for the monthly luncheon and program in the United Methodist Church. The group meets once a month on the second Friday at noon for the gathering.

Allen Swanson is the president and welcomed all to the event. Cecil Miller gave the blessing prior to the lunch. A variety of food was provided by all. Festive table decorations were provided by Elizabeth Walker and Barb Brown. At the next meeting, Jim and Lucy Marzalen will provide the table decorations.

Sunshine chairman Ruth Swanson read the list of those having a birthday and an anniversary, and the birthday and anniversary songs were sung by all. Member John Sipos gave the report on bus tours and reminded all of the prompt times that the bus leaves for each tour. O. Winston Bartholomew is the wagon master. Sipos then talked about the history of Flag Day dating back to June 14, 1777. Secretary Margie McIntyre read the minutes of the previous meeting and treasurer Valerie Bartholomew provided a financial report of the group.

The program for the day was a visit by Lisa Schmidtrerick-Miller from the Chautauqua County Department of Health. Ms. Miller’s program was entitled “Do Our Part to Save Hearts.” The program in Chautauqua County is known as CHQ250 meaning let’s save 250 hearts in the county per year through education about life saving. She said the program is nationwide. Miller provided the four symptoms of a stroke, FAST meaning if a stroke is suspected to look at the person’s face, asking the person to move his arms, asking the person to repeat a simple sentence and the time to call 9-1-1. She also talked about the ABC of heart problem, meaning taking a daily aspirin under the direction of a doctor, controlling one’s blood pressure and controlling one’s cholesterol.

The next luncheon and program will be on Friday, July 14, at the Gerry Friendship Picnic Park for the annual summer picnic. All those attending are asked to bring a dish of food to pass and their own table service. Coffee will be provided. The group concluded with all singing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds,” written by Dr. John Fawcett in 1772. New members are welcome.
