JMS PBIS Rewards Kids For Great Behavior

Painting pumpkins, and enjoying cider, doughnuts, pies and hot cocoa are just some of the ways that Jefferson Middle School’s PBIS Tier I team are rewarding kids who do the right thing at school on a daily basis. Each month, different teachers, such as homeroom or ELA, are asked nominate two students who are safe, respectful and responsible. These students then earn the right to do these fun activities.

“We decided to do something extra for those kids who consistently go the extra mile to have the character traits that are important in life,” said Jefferson Middle School Counselor Kate Cusimano. “We want to be sure that those students who are always doing the right thing also get the opportunity to be rewarded.”

The nominees receive a certificate and so far, have had cider and donuts for September, a pumpkin painting party thanks to pumpkins donated from Anderson’s Farm for October, and now Jefferson teachers are making a variety of pies that nominated students will get to eat for Thanksgiving in November. The activities are also offered at different times including before, during, and after the school day so all students get a chance to attend. In December, students will shop for holiday gifts in the Jefferson Jaguar shop and in January, the reward will be a painting class with art teacher Lisa Corey while drinking hot cocoa.

The fun activities are also in addition to the PBIS tickets that any student can receive for good behavior and are used to go to movies in the auditorium and other fun activities. The PBIS team has also instituted attendance awards in the school. The bi-weekly awards are given to the classrooms with the best attendance with the winners receiving a Friday doughnut party.
