A Synopsis Of Ice And Fire

The summer season is upon us and, along with the soaring temperatures, things are also heating up for Cold Lazarus.

For example, we have a jam-packed weekend ahead of us in which we’ll be doing three shows, all in different locations, over the course of two days.

Firstly, we’ll be playing our first headlining show at Mojo’s Music Bar on Friday evening, joined by our reggae-infused friends from Salamanca, Kaleidoscope Sky, who will open for us starting at around 10 p.m. It will be nice to return to Mojo’s after a few months away, following up on a five-show string of 104 W. Second St. appearances between the end of March and beginning of May. The Mojo’s stage is, essentially, our home stage and I’m hoping we’ll see a fair number of familiar faces this weekend. (Lately it seems that getting people to show up for and support live, original music these days is about as enjoyable as pulling teeth, but that’s a story for a different time.)

On Saturday, we’ll be playing the inaugural meet-the-artist “Glass Gathering” affair at Chautauqua Miniatures and 2 Chixx Gift Shoppe in Mayville from 2-4 p.m. Details about this event are included in the accompanying article elsewhere on this page, but we’re glad to be a part of a unique event that is expected to see some growth in the coming years. It’s always nice to be a part of a developing project when you come in on the ground level.

From there we’ll head west to perform at our favorite spot in Erie, the Kings Rook Club, later that evening. Just a couple months ago it seemed playing the Rook was going to be something that we’d have to work our way up to, but with a little help from our friends in Smackdab — who’ve played more than their share of shows at the club — we’re now already on our way to making our second appearance there. This time, we’ll be playing a full evening’s worth of music, and we’ll be bringing everything we have in our repertoire out for mass consumption.

The Rook is basically the premier venue for original music in Erie. Some really cool up-and-coming groups have come through those doors, so we’re really looking forward to being able to play for and market ourselves to a new audience.

Speaking of marketing ourselves, we expect to have our first round of official CDs available and ready for purchase by this weekend. The CDs will be of our four-track EP, “All Alone,” which was recorded in February and released digitally the following month.

We did a limited pressing of 100, as we’re planning to re-record each of these tracks — along with several others — for a full-length that we hope to release sometime in the fall. For now, the tracks can still be heard online at coldlazarus.bandcamp.com and soundcloud.com/coldlazarus. Also of note, the songs are now also available on several major music streaming sites; perhaps most notably on Spotify. Give us a listen, won’t you?

It’s been a wonderful learning, growing and healing experience being a part of a group of people that you genuinely enjoying spending time and creating with. Add to that the fact that we’ve been making great strides in the writing, recording and marketing departments, and Cold Lazarus has quickly carved out a place for itself as being one of my top achievements as a musician.

The best part of it all? We’re only getting started.

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.

HIGHLIGHTS

79th Annual Westfield Antique Show: The annual Westfield Antique Show, sponsored by the Chautauqua County Historical Society, will celebrate its 79th consecutive year in 2017 and just like in past years, there will be a wide variety of items on display and available for sale. This year’s antique show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Eason Hall — 23 Elm St. in Westfield. The event will feature antique furniture, dining sets, glassware, silver, jewelry and more. Over 20 different dealers will be in attendance. The Westfield Antique Show has its origin dating back to 1938, when Doc and Edis Shelkey organized the first ever event in Westfield. The two were well-known local antique dealers during that era and the event was so well attended they decided to hold it each year. Since then the show has become an annual tradition in Westfield.

Admission for the Westfield Antique Show is $5 for both days. For more information, including directions, visit westfieldantiqueshow.com or contact the historical society at 326-2977 or by email at cchs@mcclurgmuseum.org.

‘Belle Bash’ Concert Series To Feature Coco Montoya Sunday: The annual “Belle Bash” summer concert series aboard the Chautauqua Belle will feature legendary blues rock singer-guitarist Coco Montoya in a 7 p.m. performance Sunday. Montoya, one of the best-known, best-selling artists in blues rock, was the protege of the renowned “Master of the Telecaster” Albert Collins and spent 10 years in British blues giant John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, following in the footsteps of previous Bluesbreaker guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor.

His award-winning, 20-year solo career has produced some of the most critically-acclaimed albums in the genre. His Sunday performance on the Chautauqua Belle is a 21-and-over show, and tickets start at $59.

Attendees should meet at the Chautauqua Belle’s docking location at 78 Water St. in Mayville prior to the performance. For more information, or to purchase tickets, find the event on Facebook.

10,000 Maniacs Return To Griffis Sculpture Park Sunday: 10,000 Maniacs will make a highly anticipated return to Griffis Sculpture park in East Otto on Sunday for a 2 p.m. performance of the album “In My Tribe,” which celebrated its 30th anniversary celebration this year. “In My Tribe” was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Top 100 Albums of the 1980s, and Sunday’s concert will mark 10,000 Maniacs’ first appearance at the sculpture park since its legendary 1991 concert before more than 6,000 people. Joining the bill will be percussion-rock group from Pittsburgh, Pa., Jim Donovan and the Sun King Warriors. Donovan was one of the founding members of the band Rusted Root, and is nationally known wellness and percussion instructor. Acoustic performer and touring musician Tyler Smilo from Erie, PA will open the concert.

The concert will feature music, activities, artists, food and beer services. Concert attendees can take in the 250 sculptures that reside throughout the trails of the park, making it the United States largest outdoor sculpture park. The events will be taking place on the top of the hill at the Mill Valley site of the park. Guests must be able to endure a 10 minute walk uphill to the festival site. There will be a shuttle service that will help attendees get to the concert area. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs.

Tickets are $20 advance and $25 day of show. Children 12 and under free. Tickets can be purchased online at eventbrite.com. Gates for the show open at noon, with music starting at 2 p.m. For more information, find the event on Facebook.
