Artwork inspired by America’s “space age” will be spotlighted in a two-month exhibit in downtown Jamestown.

The Dykeman-Young Gallery and Vintage Emporium will feature the work of Dale Hogelund in an exhibit entitled “Atom Age Art” through the end of July, with an opening reception planned for Friday at 6 p.m.

Hogelund is based in Irondale, Ala., and draws inspiration from the futuristic and space-obsessed ideals of the late ’60s. With the tagline “The future was fun,” he channels his creativity into paintings and mixed media that hearken back to a time when society was projecting technological and societal advancements that never came about.

“I like old cars with fins that look like they’re moving fast, even when they aren’t,” reads a statement by Hogelund at the exhibit. “I like neon signs with big arrows that point out a good burger or comfy place to sleep. I like a certain vision of a future that never came to pass. These are a few of the things that inspire my art. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoy making it.”

Mike Dykeman, owner and curator of the Dykeman-Young Gallery and Vintage Emporium, said he came across Hogelund’s work incidentally, but was fascinated by it nonetheless.

“I was going through an art website, just skimming through, and I saw this flash of color. So I slowed down and went back to try find it, and it ended up being one of (Hogelund’s) pieces,” Dykeman said. “It’s fun, it’s colorful and it’s affordable; but I think this will appeal to anybody who is doing mid-century decorating in their home or appreciates design from that era.”

Dykeman said the Atom Age Art exhibit in Jamestown is the first to be held in the Northern U.S., as Hogelund primarily shows his work in the southern regions of the country. Hogelund will be in attendance at Friday’s reception to discuss his work and the inspiration behind it.

The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display Tuesday through Saturday from 1-7 p.m.

The Dykeman-Young Gallery and Vintage Emporium is located at 100 E. Second St. in Jamestown. For more information on the reception, call 483-772 or find “Atom Age Art Reception” on Facebook.
