A Tryptophan-Induced Musing

It’s Turkey Time again, and this time we should (hopefully) be experiencing good weather for the occasion.

As I alluded to in last year’s Thanksgiving column, the late November holiday is one of only a small handful of days throughout the year in which family togetherness is emphasized. To many, it is a day of reunions and reflections. To others, it is a stressful time of traveling in sometimes not-so-nice weather. Still others have come to view it as simply a pre-Black Friday feast.

Since I’ve never been big on the holiday spirit as a whole, not necessarily out of spite but rather a general attitude toward taking life one day at a time, Thanksgiving is usually just another day for me – albeit one that will typically include more social interaction than normal as well as an overabundance of food. This anticlimactic notion, however, will be exacerbated this year by the fact that a good portion of my holiday will be spent in the newsroom.

For most people, spending a holiday at work would probably be a bit of a buzzkill. I’m not really that upset about it (I did choose Thanksgiving as the one major holiday that I would work this year, after all) because I can use it as sort of a low-key day to catch up on some weekend stories while visiting the St. Susan Center at some point between 12:30 and 2 p.m. as they serve meals to the community for a story to appear in tomorrow’s paper.

Also, it’s very likely I will still have the opportunity to enjoy some family and food time somewhere in the middle of my shift, so it’s not like I’m going to be missing out on anything.

But then, as Thanksgiving turns to Black Friday and mass consumerism becomes the nationwide trend for the next month, I’ll be able to settle back into my regular routine -which will also include attempting to avoid as many shopping outlets and Christmas songs as possible. Not that I really have anything against Christmas, but I guess would just prefer that a sense of normalcy pervade my daily goings-on regardless of season. It’s much better that way.

But for today, I would wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and just the right amount of family togetherness so as to make for the most joyous occasion possible. Just make sure not to go overboard on the togetherness and the turkey consumption, or you may regret it later – one way or another.

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.
