This Is The Cosmos
It may not have presented anything scientifically groundbreaking, but the premiere of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” has surely made an impact on viewers worldwide.
The sequel to Carl Sagan’s PBS series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” hasn’t yet broadened my understanding of the universe any further than the original. But, writer and executive producer Ann Druyan, Sagan’s widow, has told various news outlets, including the New York Daily News, that it will take viewers places that the original didn’t.
I was skeptical about the show from the onset since it airs on Fox, but then I came to find out that it also airs on the National Geographic Channel. I was also relieved to hear that Seth MacFarlane is an executive producer of the show. And, although I don’t personally know her, I don’t believe Druyan would intentionally tarnish her late husband’s reputation with a sequel that was less than adequate of his approval. So, going forward, I do have some hope for the series.
I do admit, the premiere was quite entertaining and educational. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is perfect as a narrator for the show. His demeanor is by no means preachy or patronizing. Plus, the special effects and computer-generated graphics are stunning.
Although much of the series will likely be based on humankind’s current minuscule understanding of the universe, I believe it has the potential to stimulate the minds of people worldwide in a progressive way. Space may be the final frontier, but that doesn’t mean we should decimate the only place we have to call home in order to get there.
In addition to airing on Fox on Sundays and the National Geographic Channel on Mondays, “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” is also available on Hulu.com. For more information, visit www.cosmosontv.com or www.channel.nationalgeographic.com.
