Bonnies’ Mobley Named USBWA Player Of The Week

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected St. Bonaventure senior guard Matt Mobley as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Feb. 18. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.

Over two wins last week, Mobley averaged 28.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. He made 19-of-37 shots (51 percent) from the field including 9 of 20 (45 percent) from 3-point range. Mobley was also 9 of 11 at the free throw line.

The Worcester, Massachusetts native began the week with 30 points and nine rebounds in a 79-68 win at La Salle, his second game of 30 points or more this year. He followed that with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds in St. Bonaventure’s 77-74 win over Rhode Island on Feb. 16 at the Reilly Center. The win was not only the Bonnies’ eighth in a row, it also snapped the nation’s longest winning streak at 16. The Rams were ranked 14th in the USA Today Coaches poll and 16th in the Associated Press top 25 poll.

Mobley’s play has helped St. Bonaventure reach the 20-win plateau for the third straight season. The Bonnies (20-6) are in a tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 10-4.

For the season, Mobley is averaging 18.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The sixth-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10, he has made 78 3-pointers while shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc.

Mobley and the Bonnies will host Duquesne today at 7 p.m.
