Jackals Remain In ‘Funk,’ Fall To Albany

Entering a three-game homestand Friday, the Jamestown Jackals were in the thick of The Basketball League playoff hunt.

Five days and two losses later, their hopes are dwindling.

The Albany Patroons took control of Tuesday’s game with a 22-6 run late in the second quarter and held off Jamestown late en route to a 104-91 victory at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

“The shots that we’ve normally been hitting haven’t been falling. That’s when you have to find other ways to score,” Jamestown coach Mark Anderson said. “We’re not finding those ways.”

After beating Owensboro on Friday, the sixth-place Jackals blew a 23-point lead in a Sunday afternoon loss and coupled with last night’s defeat fell to 12-12 on the season.

“We’re in that funk right now. Unfortunately it’s at the wrong time of the year,” Anderson said. ” … We’ve got to find a way to get out of it.”

Fifth-place Albany improved to 14-10 ahead of a rematch with Jamestown set for Saturday at the Washington Avenue Armory in the state capital.

“Albany is pretty good since they’ve picked up a couple of players,” Anderson said. ” … They’ve gotten better.”

The Jackals were just 33 of 87 (37.9 percent) from the field, and turned the ball over 17 times while the Patroons were 41 of 88 (46.6 percent) from the field.

Joshua Cameron led Albany with 23 points while Anthony Moe added 20 points and 18 rebounds.

Glenroy Carr Jr. led Jamestown with 18 points, Troy Taylor had 13 and DaVonte Harris added 12.

The Patroons led 29-28 after 12 minutes, and began to build upon their lead midway through the second quarter. Jordan Robertson scored seven straight points for Albany, including a dunk and a 3-pointer, to give his team a 39-33 lead.

“They made an adjustment. They started trapping us out higher, which is something we talked about,” Anderson said about the start of the second quarter. “We adjusted, but we didn’t hit shots.”

Another Robertson dunk — his last bucket of the game — made it 44-35. Cameron then scored on back-to-back trips, the second one being a 3-pointer, as the Patroons’ advantage grew to 49-37, coaxing Anderson into a timeout with 3:47 left in the first half.

On the ensuing possession, Carr beat the shot clock with a deep 3-pointer, but that did little to stem the tide as Albany closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run that included a Cameron runner in the lane at the buzzer to make it 61-42 at halftime.

“Any time you can keep a team to one and done, that’s going to help. Conversely in the first half, we didn’t do that,” Anderson said. ” … If you give a team three chances in one trip, somebody is going to score.”

Austin Hamilton hit a 3-pointer with 1:09 left in the third quarter to get Jamestown within 10 for the first time since the score was 49-40, and DeAngelo Stewart added a bucket to close a 28-14 third quarter pulling the hosts within eight going into the final 12 minutes.

Early in the fourth quarter, Michael Davenport made it a three-point game with a bucket before the Patroons pushed their lead back up to eight. The Jackals then scored five straight points at the foul line to make it 85-82 with under eight minutes remaining, but Albany responded with a quick 8-0 run to put the game away.

“We cut it to three in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie it on a layup and we missed it,” Anderson said. “We had those opportunities.”

Now Jamestown must win at Albany on Saturday to win the season series with the Patroons, and then capture a victory the following Sunday at the Physical Education Complex while hoping for help from other teams.

“It’s a must-win game when we go up there Saturday,” Anderson said. ” … We’ve played well every time we’ve been up there.”

NOTES: Daniel Mulamba grabbed 15 rebounds while Taylor had seven assists and Hamilton had six for the Jackals. … Shodell Millinghaus scored 18 points to go along with nine assists and four steals for Albany. … The Patroons led in points off turnovers, 18-15; points in the paint, 54-34; second-chance points,16-15; and fast-break points, 15-11.
