Jackals’ Winning Streak Snapped

The Jamestown Jackals checked off two of the more important boxes of their game plan against Yakima on Sunday at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Jamestown Community College.

Jackson Trapp, who leads The Basketball League in 3-point shooting, was held to just six points while the Jackals won the battle on the glass, 63-50.

Unfortunately for the Jackals, they did not have the shooting performance they would have liked, while the Sun Kings fired home half of all their attempts from beyond the 3-point arc on the way to a 94-82 win.

The Jackals now sit at 11-10 on the season, with Sunday’s loss snapping an eight-game winning streak which included Saturday night’s 118-107 victory over Albany.

“He’s the best shooter in the league when it comes to three-pointers,” Jamestown coach Mark Anderson said of Trapp. “We held him to six, we did a number on him, but Battle and Farmer doubled their averages and that was the difference.”

With Trapp facing heavy defensive pressure, Yakima was able to find openings in their offense for both Tony Farmer and Stephen Battle, who finished with 35 and 27 points respectively.

In the final minutes of the first quarter, the Sun Kings held a 19-14 lead, a margin that was extended in a hurry after Farmer hit home on a shot from long range.

Yakima began the second period with back-to-back traditional three-point plays, with Battle drawing contact in the paint before finishing his extra shot at the foul line to make it 30-16 in favor of the visitors.

With nine minutes to go before halftime, Brent Schuck knocked down another 3 for the Sun Kings to extend that lead to 17, Yakima’s biggest of the afternoon.

“The scoring wasn’t as prevalent as last night for us,” said Anderson. “It was the second quarter when we scored two points in eight minutes. To me, that was the defining point of the game. We just weren’t hitting shots and it made the defense look more exposed than it really was.”

The Jackals rallied with a good stretch of offense after that dry spell, as DeAngelo Stewart hit home on a 3 as part of a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double.

That was followed by a nice inside cut from Austin Hamilton, a move in the post from DaVonte Harris and an old-fashioned three-point play that was completed by Glenroy Carr Jr.

Jamestown pulled within nine points soon after that as Harris hit home on a deep 3 while Hamilton found his shooting stroke from long range as well, but the Sun Kings continued to find buckets from Battle down the stretch to close the half at 54-42.

Down the stretch of the second half, the Jackals collected a pair of 3s by Corey Wilford and some nice inside buckets from Hamilton, but were unable to close the gap in the face of stronger shooting for the visitors.

“Ninety-four points, and we have our normal game, it is nip-and-tuck to the end,” Anderson said. “I think it was just the fact of how physical last night was. We played both ends of the court, and just didn’t hit shots that we normally hit.”

Despite playing against much larger competition, Troy Taylor put together a great all-around performance for the Jackals with 12 points, a team-high 16 rebounds and seven assists, while Harris finished with 14 points and four assists.

“He got hit in the shoulder and the neck area so I wasn’t sure if coming out of half time he was going to play,” Anderson said of Taylor. “He is the leader of this team when it comes to just getting everything set from day one. He is one of those guys who can play for me no matter where I am at.”

Hamilton and Stewart each finished with 13 points with the latter grabbing 14 rebounds to complete the double-double.
