Dean Shines; Jamestown Relay Takes Third

AMHERST — Jamestown’s Kyle Dean had the top performance among local swimmers at the Section VI Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday at the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena.

Dean took second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.24 seconds, more than a second behind winner Benjamin Harper of Kenmore. Dean’s teammate Matthew Roehmholdt was seventh (50.96, personal best by 1.64 seconds), Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Austin Strong was eighth (51.07), Fredonia’s Bill Osula was 10th (51.10), Jamestown’s Brennan Roehmholdt was 14th (51.48) and Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Cooper Thomas was 21st (52.52).

Dean was also third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.33 seconds — a personal best by .28 seconds — while Osula was fourth (22.52), Brennan Roehmholdt was 11th (23.29), Matthew Roehmholdt was 15th (23.50) and Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Elliot Johnson was 19th (23.68).

The Red Raiders’ 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Brennan, Matthew and Joseph Roehmholdt as well as Dean was third in 3:22.09, bettering their personal-best time by 4.49 seconds. Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Elliot Johnson, RJ Helt, Jake Carlson and Strong were 14th (3:35.70) while Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Zach Gifford, Thomas, Gannon Moore and Cole Carlson were 21st (3:39.45).

Joseph Roehmholdt took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.29 while Moore was 10th (2:13.10) and Helt was 17th (2:14.95).

Gifford was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.11) while Joseph Roehmholdt was seventh (5:14.17, personal best by 5.14 seconds).

Strong took fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.51) while Gifford was 11th (1:55.58) and Thomas was 19th (1:58.32).

The Roehmholdts and Dean took fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.35) while Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Moore, Brady Lindstrom, Eston Shedd and Carlson were 26th (1:56.39) and Fredonia’s Finn Frerichs, Matthew Brockelbank, Ronan Murphy and Nicholas Wittmeyer were 31st (1:59.93).

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s David Marshall and Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Tyler Ridout tied for seventh in 1-meter diving with scores of 374.75. Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Jacob Lawton was 19th (305.90).

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Elliot Johnson, Eathan Johnson, Helt and Strong were 10th (1:35.77) in the 200-yard freestyle relay while Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Carlson, Thomas, Shedd and Gifford were 14th (1:37.04).

Moore was 12th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.27) and Jamestown’s Beck Anderson was 26th (1:03.04).

Eathan Johnson was 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.05).

Anderson was 23rd in the 100-yard butterfly (59.85).

Any swimmer who reached a state-qualifying time during the season will now prepare for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships to be held Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island.
