AMHERST — The Jamestown High School swim team didn’t overwhelm anyone with its roster size when it arrived at the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Class AA Championships last weekend at Sweet Home High School, but when the meet was over everyone who knew they were.

Sparked by Kyle Dean’s championship performance in the 50-yard freestyle and his anchoring the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, the Red Raiders finished fourth overall despite having just eight athletes, the smallest team in the field.

Dean, a sophomore, captured the title in the 50 free with a personal-best time of 22.61 and was joined on the championship 200 freestyle relay by senior Matthew Roehmholdt, junior Brennan Roehmholdt and sophomore Joseph Roehmholdt. Together, they posted a winning time of 1:32.95, which was a season best.

That same quartet placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:26.58) and third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.95). Both times were also season bests.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jacob Anderson swam personal-best times in both his events and finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.42) after entering the race seeded 16th; Beck Anderson swam personal-best times in both of his events, a 59.9 in the 100-yard butterfly and a 1:03 in the 100-yard backstroke; and Joseph Roehmholdt and Brennan Roehmholdt finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.03) and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.40), respectively.

The Class Championships will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Buffalo.

Among the divers, seventh-grader Caleb Piazza placed eighth with 263.55 points for 11 dives on Monday at Williamsville North High School, while teammate senior Elijah McIntosh was 12th with 243.75 points. They both qualified for the Class Championship diving on Feb. 5.
