Bonnies Cold In Loss At Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA — Entering Sunday, the record for Saint Joseph’s seemed deceiving — though the Hawks were just 4-11 and seeking their first Atlantic 10 win, it remained a squad that entered the year picked fifth in the conference preseason poll and with a 1,000-point scorer in guard Alyssa Monaghan.

Indeed, the Hawks played much more like the team they were picked to be by the league’s coaches in preseason than the club that had struggled the first half of the season as they picked up a 66-41 victory over the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team at Hagan Arena.

Deja Francis led the Bonnies with 10 points while sophomore Abigail Johnson saw her first action of the year and finished with 6 points and three rebounds. Emily Calabrese also chipped in with 6 points.

Monaghan finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Kristalyn Baisden also poured in 16 for the Hawks.

The Hawks (5-11, 1-2 Atlantic 10) could do little wrong to start the game.

Saint Joseph’s shot 62 percent from the floor in the first quarter and connected on 4-of-6 3-point attempts, using a 15-2 run to race out to a 23-8 advantage after 10 minutes.

As it would turn out, the Bonnies would never be able to climb out of the early hole.

Bonaventure got its defense going in the second quarter and limited the Hawks to 4 for 17 from the field and, after a 9-4 break, cut its deficit to 27-17. Baisden pushed her first-half point total to 12 with a basket before the intermission buzzer to send the hosts to break with a 34-19 lead, however.

Francis drove the lane for a 34-21 score on the first drive of the second half, but it would be as close as the Bonnies could get the rest of the way.

St. Bonaventure (4-12, 1-2 A-10) kept the turnovers low with 14 for the game, a number that rose in the final seconds, but the Hawks used their height advantage to total eight total blocks and won the rebounding battle, 38-33.

The Bona offense never found a groove on the day, finishing with a 33 percent mark from the floor (17 for 52) while the Hawks finished at 41 percent (24 for 58) with eight 3-pointers.

Bona returns home to take on preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton in a special Wednesday afternoon matinee at 4 p.m. inside the Reilly Center.
