Strong Fourth Quarter Helps Trojans Put Away T’Birds

MAYVILLE — Freshman Aiden Kennedy scored 9 points, including a 3-pointer, in a 24-4 fourth quarter as Southwestern put away Chautauqua Lake for a 64-41 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West win Tuesday night.

The Trojans (4-1, 1-0) led 40-37 entering the final eight minutes before Kennedy scored nearly all of his 11 points and Southwestern held the Thunderbirds to just four points in the quarter.

Alex Card led the Trojans with 14 points and six assists while Jake Hnatyszyn had 9 points and 12 rebounds. Cooper Pannes grabbed six rebounds while Mayson Mathews had six rebounds and four assists.

Luke Waters scored all 12 of his team-high in the middle two quarters for Chautauqua Lake (4-1, 0-1). Bryan Anderson and Nate Adams each had seven rebounds for the hosts, who shot 16 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 29 percent overall.

“We stopped playing team basketball,” Chautauqua Lake coach Mike Putney said. “You name it and we did it in the fourth quarter. It just wasn’t pretty.”

FALCONER — Michael Beatman scored 11 of his 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the first quarter and Sherman pulled away from Falconer for a 60-33 Division 2 West victory.

The Wildcats (1-2, 1-0) led 20-9 after eight minutes and 31-11 at halftime.

John Swabik led Sherman with 15 points while Jordan Caron grabbed five rebounds. Austin Tallman and Keith Gormley each grabbed four rebounds while Kameron Ayers had four steals.

Nate Seaholm led the Golden Falcons (1-4, 0-1) with 7 points, five rebounds and two steals. Nate Abbey chipped in five rebounds.

Carson Crist scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Peter Auer had 24 points and eight assists to lead Maple Grove to an 80-59 Division 1 West victory over Dunkirk.

Crist had nine points, including a 3-pointer, in a 24-13 first quarter before Auer added 10 during a 19-12 third quarter for the Red Dragons (3-1, 1-0).

Earl Steward led the Marauders (1-3, 0-1) with 20 points while Tywon Wright added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

ELLICOTTVILLE — Randolph improved to 2-0 on the year with a 67-43 nonleague win over Ellicottville (2-3).

Tyler Hind led the winners with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, while adding eight assists. Gabe McCoy aided Randolph with 18 points and six rebounds.

Clayton Rowland finished with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double in the loss.

PIRATES EDGE PANAMA

PANAMA — Clymer (2-2, 1-0) was able to sneak by Panama (0-3, 0-1) with a 66-60 Division 2 West win on Tuesday thanks to 21 points and six rebounds from Lucas Willink.

The Pirates also received 19 points from Robert Overton and 17 from Lucas Beckerink while committing just seven turnovers. Beckerink also grabbed five rebounds.

Cameron Barmore led the Panthers with 21 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks while Mitch Hovey added 12 points and eight assists.
