Thunderbirds Rally To Victory In Second Half

WESTFIELD — Ryan Jafarjian ran 16 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns as Chautauqua Lake/Westfield beat Silver Creek/Forestville, 21-8, Friday night in Class C interdivisional play in Westfield.

The Black Knights (2-4, 2-3 Class C North) led 8-0 at halftime on Austin Rott’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Cole Golembieski, but the Thunderbirds answered with 21 second-half points.

In the third quarter, Jafarjian scored on an 8-yard run and Zach Fischer added the 2-point conversion on a pass from Kyler Majka to tie the game.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield (4-3, 3-3 Class C South) took the lead in the fourth quarter when Majka found Fischer for a 20-yard scoring strike, but the 2-point conversion attempt failed. Jafarjian put the game away with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Majka finished 3 of 5 for 57 yards with all three completions going to Fischer.

CATTARAUGUS — Easton Tanner scored four touchdowns as Maple Grove beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley, 48-0, in Class D action.

Tanner opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown catch from Carson Crist. In the third quarter, Tanner added a 50-yard rushing touchdown and a 51-yard punt return for a touchdown before adding a 9-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Crist threw touchdown passes of 5 and 25 yards to Daren Vaillancourt in the second quarter. Zach Hendrick capped the scoring for Maple Grove with a 48-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Crist finished 7 of 14 for 139 yards and three touchdowns while Tanner ran 12 times for 137 yards. Hendrick added four carries for 59 yards while Taige Jones had eight carries for 54 yards.

Defensively, Jake Tomlinson was in on 10 tackles and Vaillancourt was in on eight, including a sack.

The Red Dragons outgained the Timberwolves, 386-151, and did not allow a third- or fourth-down conversion all night.

RANDOLPH — Portville stopped a late 2-point conversion and then ran out the clock to stun Randolph/Frewsburg, 28-26, in Class C South play.

Trailing 28-20 with eight minutes left in the third quarter, the Cardinals put together a 21-play, 93-yard drive that spanned the end of the third quarter and a significant portion of the fourth quarter. Nolan Brink capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, but the Panthers stuffed Randolph/Frewsburg’s conversion attempt to keep their 28-26 lead.

Portville then kept the ball for the remainder of the game, kneeling deep in Cardinals’ territory to run out the clock.

The Panthers opened the scoring when Jared Zenner returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown to lead 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

Randolph/Frewsburg answered with a five-play, 60-yard drive capped by Isaac Hind’s 21-yard touchdown run.

Three plays later, Mike Stillman hit Jayden Lassiter with a 76-yard touchdown strike to help the Portville lead grow to 14-6.

The Cardinals’ Deter Miinte answered with an 8-yard touchdown run, but the quick-strike Panthers scored on their next offensive play, a 69-yard run by Lassiter, to lead 21-12.

Before halftime, Randolph/Frewsburg put together a 17-play, 74-yard drive capped by Skylar Wright’s 9-yard touchdown run that made it 21-20 after Ty Hind’s 2-point conversion pass to Dan Reinagel.

After the break, the Panthers went 70 yards in two plays, capped by a 50-yard touchdown run by Lassiter to make it 28-20 after Alex Wenke’s fourth successful point-after kick.

Lassiter ran nine times for 144 yards and two touchdowns while catching three passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Wright ran 21 times for 134 yards and a touchdown while Miinte ran 27 times for 121 yards and a touchdown for Randolph/Frewsburg, which picked up 299 yards on the ground and ran 64 offensive plays to just 25 for Portville.

Wright was in on 11 tackles and Peyton Hayes was in on seven for the Cardinals.

ALLEGANY — Franklinville/Ellicottville improved to 3-4 overall and 2-4 against Class C South opponents with a 33-21 win over Allegany-Limestone (1-7, 0-6).

Logan Frank finished the night with five touchdowns for the winners, hitting Tyler Clear and Niklas Logel on touchdown passes of 19 and 24 yards, respectively, while finishing his night 8 of 11 with 123 yards through the air.

Frank would also rush for 130 yards on 21 carries, scoring from 8, 3 and 20 yards out for the Titans while adding 5.5 tackles.

Thomas Callen completed 9 of 21 passes for 230 yards and three scores for the Gators, with Micah Osby grabbing six balls for 98 yards.

John Giardini led Allegany-Limestone with 8.5 tackles while Jordan Peplinksi had 5.5, including 1.5 sacks, for the Titans.
